Adam C Mumford, PhD
Dr. Adam Mumford is a Physical Scientist and has been with the U.S. Geological Survey since 2014, currently working at the MD-DE-DC Water Science Center.
Dr. Adam Mumford is a geomicrobiologist who studies the interactions between microbial communities, emerging contaminants, and metals in surface water, sediments, and the shallow subsurface. His current work focuses on the fate and transport of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and the potential for microbial degradation of these persistent environmental contaminants. He also studies the responses of microbial communities to inputs of produced water from unconventional oil and gas development, and how these responses can mitigate or exacerbate the risk posed by produced waters to streams and shallow aquifers.
