Elizabeth (Liz) Nystrom is a Hydrologist with the New York Water Science Center.
Liz began her career with the USGS in 1999 as a student in the Illinois District working with acoustic Doppler current profilers. Her research interests are broad and are currently focused on research to operations, and include using cameras and imagery for hydrologic measurements, harmful algal blooms, hydraulic modeling, inundation mapping, bathymetry, and hydroacoustics.
Education:
2001 - M.S., Civil and Environmental Engineering, Environmental Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering, University of Illinois

Flood-Inundation Maps for the Schoharie Creek at Prattsville, New York
Background and Problem Prattsville has experienced severe flooding along the Schoharie Creek, most notably during August 2011 following Hurricane Irene, which severely damaged or destroyed large areas of the town, and caused several million dollars in damages (Figure 1). Before and during a flood, forewarning and emergency response are critical. The rescue efforts of emergency responders...

From 2013 to 2015, bathymetric surveys of New York Citys six West of Hudson reservoirs (Ashokan, Cannonsville, Neversink, Pepacton, Rondout, and Schoharie) were performed to provide updated capacity tables and bathymetric maps. Depths were surveyed with a single-beam echo sounder and real-time kinematic global positioning system (RTK-GPS) along planned transects at predetermined...

Summary of hydrologic modeling for the Delaware River Basin using the Water Availability Tool for Environmental Resources (WATER) Summary of hydrologic modeling for the Delaware River Basin using the Water Availability Tool for Environmental Resources (WATER)
The Water Availability Tool for Environmental Resources (WATER) is a decision support system for the nontidal part of the Delaware River Basin that provides a consistent and objective method of simulating streamflow under historical, forecasted, and managed conditions. In order to quantify the uncertainty associated with these simulations, however, streamflow and the associated...

An empirical approach to modeling methylmercury concentrations in an Adirondack stream watershed An empirical approach to modeling methylmercury concentrations in an Adirondack stream watershed
Inverse empirical models can inform and improve more complex process-based models by quantifying the principal factors that control water quality variation. Here we developed a multiple regression model that explains 81% of the variation in filtered methylmercury (FMeHg) concentrations in Fishing Brook, a fourth-order stream in the Adirondack Mountains, New York, a known “hot spot” of Hg
