(She/her)Michelle Hornberger is a research physical scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey, focusing on identifying the ecological consequence of chemical and physical disturbance in aquatic systems. Benthic macroinvertebrates are used as bioindicators of environmental condition in watersheds impacted by multiple stressors, including hard rock mining and wildfires.

Influence of remediation in a mine-impacted river: Metal trends over large spatial and temporal scales
The effectiveness of mine-waste remediation at the Clark Fork River Superfund site in western Montana, USA, was examined by monitoring metal concentrations in resident biota (caddisfly, Hydropsyche spp.) and bed sediment over a 19-year period.
