RCMAP - Gunnison River at the Hartland Dam near Delta, Colorado
The U.S. Geological Survey was engaged in a program to monitor and assess the long-term geomorphic behavior of selected river and stream reaches that previously had undergone some physical modification. These modifications included natural channel adjustments to floods as well as intentional channel reconfigurations to alter the function or appearance of a river reach.
History:
The Hartland Diversion Dam was constructed in 1881 for agricultural irrigation and stock watering purposes. The 6 foot high structure spanned the entire reach of the river, restricting the upstream movement for fish during most flow stages. Modification of the dam provides a fish passage to extend the upstream range and re-establishment of endangered Colorado native fishes and increasing the number of bottomland sites and opportunities for habitat restoration and enhancement to assist the recovery of endangered fish. Modifications also included a boat passage along with modifications to the dam to reduce hazard on the north side of the river to allow for low hazard passage by boating enthusiasts. Construction began September, 2001 and completed March, 2012.
The Hartland Diversion Dam modifications were completed in March, 2012. Following the completion of the modifications a survey of the reach above and below the dam were completed. The survey included 8 cross-sections (4 above the dam and 4 below the dam) along with some sediment collection. A follow-up survey was completed in August 2013 focusing on resurveying the cross-sections to assess changes in the reach that are potentially associated with dam modifications.
Location:
Hartland Diversion Dam is located on the Gunnison River 3.6 miles upstream of the Uncompahgre River confluence near Delta, Colorado. The reach extends from Se ¼ S5 T15S R95W to NE ¼ S7 T15S R95W. U.S. Geological survey stream gage 09144250 Gunnison River at Delta, CO is approximately 2.8 mi. downstream of the dam and located at lat 38°45'11", long 108°04'40" along left bank in Confluence Park, Delta, CO.
