RCMAP - Muddy Creek below Wolford Mountain Reservoir near Kremmling, Colorado
The U.S. Geological Survey was engaged in a program to monitor and assess the long-term geomorphic behavior of selected river and stream reaches that previously had undergone some physical modification. These modifications included natural channel adjustments to floods as well as intentional channel reconfigurations to alter the function or appearance of a river reach.
Reaches 1 and 2 of the Muddy Creek study area were monumented and surveyed by the USGS as part of the Reconfigured Channel Monitoring and Assessment Program (RCMAP) in 2001, 2003, 2006 and 2008. The purpose of the channel modifications was to enhance and improve trout habitat for the existing fish in the creek. Muddy Creek is not stocked in this area.
Reconfiguration activities were completed in the fall of 2003. The 3,200-ft monitoring Reach 2 was resurveyed and photographed by the USGS in October 2003, after modifications were completed, in August 2006 after a peak dam release of 917 ft3/s, and in August 2008 after a peak dam release of 950 ft3/s (provisional discharge). Changes in channel geometry and boulder structures resulting from the 2006 and 2008 peaks are being evaluated.
Location:
The Muddy Creek study area begins approximately 0.3 mile downstream from the Wolford Mountain Dam and approximately 3.5 miles northwest of Kremmling, in the northeast ¼ of section 36, T2N, R81W, Grand County. Streamflow gaging station 09041400 Muddy Creek below Wolford Mountain Reservoir near Kremmling, Colorado, is approximately 1 mile upstream, below Wolford Mountain Dam and has recorded reservoir releases since July 1995.
The study area consists of two actively monitored reaches. Reach 1 is a sinuous, unaltered, "control" reach that begins at the USGS streamflow gaging station and continues approximately 0.3 mile (1,600 ft) downstream to the boundary of the Grand River Ranch. Reach 2 is a sinuous 0.6 mile (3,200 ft) segment of the creek beginning approximately 1 mile downstream from the Wolford Mountain Dam.
