Protandrena abdominalis, f, face, Colorado Co., TX
Protandrena abdominalis, f, face, Colorado Co., TXA bee that has not been seen in Maryland for over 100 years. Protandrena abdominalis. And...still has not been seen in Maryland for 100 years. This specimen actually came from Texas where I was visiting my kin (but not so secretly also collecting bees).

Protandrena abdominalis, f, left side, Colorado co., TX
Protandrena abdominalis, f, left side, Colorado co., TXThis little red bee was collected on spotted beebalm. It seems to be the only species of plant, with the possibility of some close relatives being involved, that this bee finds worthy of collecting pollen from. If you Google images of spotted beebalm you'll see that it is quite the complicated and rather ornate flowering plant.

A populous genus with many South American species, check out the ultra wide head of this male from Argentina. From the Packer Lab collection.

Pseudoanthidium nanum, m, Washington Co, right side
Pseudoanthidium nanum, m, Washington Co, right sideMeet an illegal immigrant. This is Pseudoanthidium nanum a bee we first realized was present about 10 years ago. It now is established in the NJ and MD areas, and I believe I saw records from the Chicago area last year. I have only found it in the most urban of urban areas on the riot of corrupting weeds that we always bring with us where ever we live.

Stelis foederalis, M, back, Michigan, Keweenaw County
Stelis foederalis, M, back, Michigan, Keweenaw CountyNot awesome pictures, but sometimes we need to take pictures of very rare specimens not because they are beautiful in aspect but because they are all we have. Stelis foederalis is a rare nest parasite of presumably Osmia species. These were found on Isle Royale wayyyyy up in Lake Superior closer to Canada than Michigan.

Some of the Stelis groups of bees are very colorful. This is true of S. louisae....a nest parasite of Megachile campanulae and clan. This male was collected on Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in the mostly marsh county of Dorchester. Photograph by Claire Mudd.

Stelis nasuta, M, Back, Greece, Aegean Islands, Lesvos, Mytilene
Stelis nasuta, M, Back, Greece, Aegean Islands, Lesvos, MytileneThree pictures of Stelis nasuta from the Grecian Islands, collected by Jelle Devalez who has the honor of studying and interpreting for us all the bee faunaof these islands. How nice for us all. The species lays its eggs in the nest of the Osmia species that we have illustrated previously. Just doing its job, nothing personal.
