IN-KY scientists collect monthly chemical/suspended sediment and flow data as part of the Great Lakes Tributary Monitoring program. As part of the Great Lakes Research Initiative, the data we provide is used for long-term trends analysis.
The USGS Great Lakes Monitoring Initiative (GLRI) is a cross-disciplinary, collaborative, integrative science plan to provide resource managers with the information and decision-making tools they need to help restore the Great Lakes.
We are contributing to the GLRI by monitoring a site at the Indiana Harbor Canal at Canal Street in East Chicago, Indiana, as part of the Great Lakes Tributary Monitoring Program:
- Samples are collected for analyses of nutrients, chloride and sediment.
- Samples also are collected for the GLRI Contaminants of Environmental Concern (CEC) at the same time. For FY 2016, pesticides are the major interest of the GLRI CEC study.
Our data provides baseline information for the effectiveness of restoration activities. Watershed modeling will help make progress towards determining the total loading and understanding the management of restoration efforts.
