Dr. Davina Passeri of the St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center will present a talk titled, “Stakeholder engagement to inform decision analysis and development and application of integrated models of hydrodynamics, barrier island morphology, and marsh evolution” as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Ocean Modeling Science Seminar series.

Coastal communities in the Mississippi and Alabama area are at increasing risk from the combined effects of flooding and erosion from storms and sea-level rise. Coastal environments like barrier islands, marshes, and estuaries are critical for protecting populated coastlines from these impacts, lending to the growing interest in coastal restoration. Dr. Passeri is leading a project, funded by the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) Effects of Sea Level Rise Program, to enhance modeling of barrier island change, relationships among them and nearby estuaries and marshes, and how coastal hazards like sea-level rise and storm inundation may impact ecosystems across the Mississippi Sound. This information will be used to evaluate trade-offs between coastal management strategies and proposed restoration efforts in the region to inform decision-making.

This webinar series is run at the NOAA Coastal Marine Modeling Branch to share news on coastal ocean science, technology, and computer modeling. The audience includes a growing community of scientists from NOAA, other agencies, academia, and the private sector.
