SPCMSC Scientists Live-Tweeted Conference Presentations for Geological Society of America (GSA)
USGS scientists Jennifer Miselis and Daniel Ciarletta live-tweeted presentations in lieu of in-person Geological Society of America conference about barrier island evolution.
The Geological Society of America Joint Southeast-Northeast conference, scheduled for March 16–20, was cancelled. In lieu of in-person presentations, GSA session chairs invited presenters to share their research with colleagues via Twitter. SPCMSC Research Geologist Jennifer Miselis and Mendenhall Postdoctoral Fellow Daniel Ciarletta live-tweeted presentations about barrier island evolution. Miselis tweeted about how exchanges of sediment between the shoreface, beaches, and dunes drive barrier island evolution and explored how humans may impact that process. Ciarletta’s Twitter presentation explained how he uses field and modeling approaches to study barrier island sensitivity to sediment flux, sea-level rise and storms. Both scientists received and responded to questions via Twitter, allowing them to interact and engage with their audience as they would have during a regular conference.
