Altitude, depth, and thickness of the Galena-Platteville Bedrock Unit in the subcrop area of Illinois and Wisconsin Altitude, depth, and thickness of the Galena-Platteville Bedrock Unit in the subcrop area of Illinois and Wisconsin
The Galena-Platteville bedrock unit is a carbonate deposit of Ordovician age, composed of the Galena and Platteville Groups in Illinois and the Sinnippee Group in Wisconsin. It is the uppermost bedrock unit (subcrop) in most of northern Illinois and southern and eastern Wisconsin. The subcrop area is shaded in figure 1 of sheet 1 (Batten and others, 1997). The unit is predominately...

Water quality of lakes in Voyageurs National Park, northern Minnesota, 1999 Water quality of lakes in Voyageurs National Park, northern Minnesota, 1999
Water-quality samples were collected during July 1999 from selected lakes and bays, and the mouths of two rivers that flow into Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota. Results of laboratory analyses and field measurements of chemical and physical properties were compared to similar data collected during 1977-83. Water-quality data were evaluated for changes in specific conductance

Pesticides in streams in part of the Upper Mississippi River Basin, Minnesota and Wisconsin, 1974-94 Pesticides in streams in part of the Upper Mississippi River Basin, Minnesota and Wisconsin, 1974-94
Analysis of historical pesticide information by the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program indicates that land use and pesticide use affect detections of pesticides in streams in part of the Upper Mississippi River Basin (UMIS). Agricultural pesticide use was greatest in the Minnesota River Basin. Greater than twenty-seven times more herbicides than insecticides were used for

Water-resources-related information for the St. Croix Reservation and vicinity, Wisconsin Water-resources-related information for the St. Croix Reservation and vicinity, Wisconsin
The St. Croix Chippewa Tribe is interested in documenting water-quality conditions in lakes and streams adjacent to their Reservation lands in northwestern Wisconsin and developing management plans to protect these water resources. This report provides the Tribe with a retrospective summary and analysis of available water-resources-related information for their Reservation and vicinity...

Ecology and biology of paddlefish in North America: historical perspectives, management approaches, and research priorities Ecology and biology of paddlefish in North America: historical perspectives, management approaches, and research priorities
Paddlefish (Polyodon spathula, Polyodontidae)are large, mostly-riverine fish that once were abundant in medium- to large-sized river systems throughout much of the central United States. Concern for paddlefish populations has grown from a regional fisheries issue to one of national importance for the United States. In 1989, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) was petitioned to...

Declining scaup populations: issues, hypotheses, and research needs Declining scaup populations: issues, hypotheses, and research needs
The population estimate for greater (Aythya marila) and lesser (Aythya affinis) scaup (combined) has declined dramatically since the early 1980s to record lows in 1998. The 1998 estimate of 3.47 million scaup is far below the goal of 6.3 million set in the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP), causing concern among biologists and hunters. We summarize issuesof concern...

Mapping forest canopy gaps using air-photo interpretation and ground surveys Mapping forest canopy gaps using air-photo interpretation and ground surveys
Canopy gaps are important structural components of forested habitats for many wildlife species. Recent improvements in the spatial accuracy of geographic information system tools facilitate accurate mapping of small canopy features such as gaps. We compared canopy-gap maps generated using ground survey methods with those derived from air-photo interpretation. We found that maps created...

Trace elements, organochlorines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, dioxins, and furans in lesser scaup wintering on the Indiana Harbor Canal Trace elements, organochlorines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, dioxins, and furans in lesser scaup wintering on the Indiana Harbor Canal
During the winter of 1993a??94, male lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) were collected on the heavily polluted Indiana Harbor Canal (IHC), East Chicago, IN, USA, and examined for tissue contaminant levels. Lesser scaup collected on the IHC had higher concentrations of cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), selected organchlorine pesticides...

Efficacy of hydrogen peroxide to control mortalities associated with bacterial gill disease infections on hatchery-reared salmonids Efficacy of hydrogen peroxide to control mortalities associated with bacterial gill disease infections on hatchery-reared salmonids
The efficacy of hydrogen peroxide to control mortalities associated with bacterial gill disease (BGD) was evaluated in three trials conducted at two Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources hatcheries. Microscopic examination of the fish gills before treatment revealed gill damage and the presence of bacteria indicative of BGD. In separate trials, brown trout Salmo trutta, chinook...
