Disposition of 1-naphthol in the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) Disposition of 1-naphthol in the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus)
The pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution, and metabolism of 1-naphthol were examined in the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus ). After oral dosing, peak plasma concentrations of 1-naphthol occurred at 1 hr; parent compound made up less than 15% of the total radioactivity, and the bioavailability was 32%. Plasma protein binding was 92% and was independent of concentration. 1-Naphthol...

Simulation of regional ground-water flow in the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer system in the northern Midwest, United States: in Regional aquifer-system analysis Simulation of regional ground-water flow in the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer system in the northern Midwest, United States: in Regional aquifer-system analysis
A six-State area in the northern Midwest of the United States has become increasingly dependent on ground water from the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer system, which consists of a sequence of sandstones, carbonate rocks, and shales. Ground-water withdrawals from the aquifer system began in the late 1800's and increased to approximately 684 million gallons per day (1,058 cubic feet per...

Water, Energy, and Biogeochemical Budgets (WEBB) program: Data availability and research at the Northern Temperate Lakes site in north-central Wisconsin Water, Energy, and Biogeochemical Budgets (WEBB) program: Data availability and research at the Northern Temperate Lakes site in north-central Wisconsin
More than three thousand kettle lakes, widely dispersed within a mixed temperate forest ecosystem, are predominant features of the Northern Highland area of north-central Wisconsin. A hydrological and biogeochemical investigation of seven of these lakes and their watershed area is currently in progress as part of the Water, Energy, and Biogeochemical Budgets (WEBB) program of the U.S...

Statistical models for estimating daily streamflow in Michigan Statistical models for estimating daily streamflow in Michigan
Statistical models for estimating daily streamflow were analyzed for 25 pairs of streamflow-gaging stations in Michigan. Stations were paired by randomly choosing a station operated in 1989 at which 10 or more years of continuous flow data had been collected and at which flow is virtually unregulated; a nearby station was chosen where flow characteristics are similar. Streamflow data...

Survey of non-charter boat recreational fishing in the U.S. Virgin Islands Survey of non-charter boat recreational fishing in the U.S. Virgin Islands
A telephone survey was conducted by the U.S. Virgin Islands Division of Fish and Wildlife from July- September 1986 to evaluate the efficacy of telephone surveys as a sampling technique for obtaining reliable fisheries data, and to collect fisheries data for the recreational non-charter boat fishery around the Virgin Islands. Results suggest that telephone surveys by themselves may...

Flooding mortality and habitat renewal for least terns and piping plovers Flooding mortality and habitat renewal for least terns and piping plovers
We observed extensive mortality (eggs and chicks) of the endangered interior population of the Least Tern (Sterna antillarum) and threatened Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) caused by natural flooding during the 1990 breeding season along the Platte River, Nebraska USA. Aerial videography of the Platte River before and after the flood revealed a 78% reduction of perennial vegetation on...

A sediment suspension system for bioassays with small aquatic organisms A sediment suspension system for bioassays with small aquatic organisms
Exposure of aquatic organisms to suspended sediments can impair growth and survival and increase bioaccumulation of sediment-associated contaminants. However, evaluation of the effects of suspended sediments and their associated contaminants on aquatic organisms has been hampered by the lack of a practical and inexpensive exposure system for conducting bioassays. We present a cost...

Physical characteristics of stream subbasins in the Blue Earth River Basin, south-central Minnesota and north-central Iowa Physical characteristics of stream subbasins in the Blue Earth River Basin, south-central Minnesota and north-central Iowa
This report presents data describing the physical characteristics of stream basins upstream from selected points on streams in the Blue Earth River basin, located in south-central Minnesota and north-central Iowa. The physical characteristics are the drainage area of the basin, the percentage area of the basin covered only by lakes, the percentage area of the basin covered by both lakes...

Habitat use by larval fishes in backwater lake of the upper Mississippi River Habitat use by larval fishes in backwater lake of the upper Mississippi River
Light traps were used to sample larval fishes in Lawrence Lake (Pool 8, upper Mississippi River) from late May through mid-August 1990. Catches differed considerably between vegetated sites and an adjacent open-water area and were highly variable among vegetated stations. Sunfishes (Lepomis spp.) dominated the vegetated sites. Brook silversides (Labidesthes sicculus), Cyprinidae and...
