The northern pintail in North America: status and conservation needs of a struggling population The northern pintail in North America: status and conservation needs of a struggling population

The number of northern pintails (Anas acuta) in North America continues to be low despite sub- stantially improved wetland habitat conditions as recorded by the May Breeding Population and Habitat Survey (May Survey, United States Fish and Wildlife Service [USFWS] 1998; Figure 1). In 1993-97, following extended drought during the 1980s and early 1990s, favorable precipitation pat- terns...

Role of charred wood, heat-shock and light in germination of postfire phrygana species from the eastern Mediterranean Basin Role of charred wood, heat-shock and light in germination of postfire phrygana species from the eastern Mediterranean Basin

Seeds of 22 species collected from recently burned phrygana were tested for their response to fire-type cues of charred wood and heat-shock. All Cistus species were stimulated by brief heat-shock, as shown in previous studies; however, none responded to charred wood. Only one of the 22 species was stimulated by charred wood, and only in dark-inhibited seeds, and this response did not...

Association of seasonal reproductive patterns with changing food availability in an equatorial carnivore, the spotted hyaena (Crocuta crocuta) Association of seasonal reproductive patterns with changing food availability in an equatorial carnivore, the spotted hyaena (Crocuta crocuta)

Reproductive seasonalitywas examined inan equatorial populationof free-living spotted hyaenas (Crocuta crocuta) inKenya. The study population was observed continuously for 10 years, duringwhich time the dates of all births, conceptions, weanings, andcubdeathswererecorded.Local preyabundancewasestimatedtwoto four timespermonth, andrainfallwas recordeddailythroughout thestudyperiod

Temporal and spatial variability in thalweg profiles of a gravel-bed river Temporal and spatial variability in thalweg profiles of a gravel-bed river

This study used successive longitudinal thalweg profiles in gravel-bed rivers to monitor changes in bed topography following floods and associated large sediment inputs. Variations in channel bed elevations, distributions of residual water depths, percentage of channel length occupied by riffles, and a spatial autocorrelation coefficient (Moran's I) were used to quantify changes in...

Reference conditions for giant sequoia forest restoration: structure, process, and precision Reference conditions for giant sequoia forest restoration: structure, process, and precision

National Park Service policy directs that more natural conditions be restored to giant sequoia groves, which have been altered by a century of fire exclusion. Efforts to find a reasonable and practical definition of “natural” have helped drive scientists and land managers to use past grove conditions as reference conditions for restoration. Extensive research aimed at determining...

Effects of Protective Fencing on Birds, Lizards, and Black-Tailed Hares in the Western Mojave Desert Effects of Protective Fencing on Birds, Lizards, and Black-Tailed Hares in the Western Mojave Desert

), perennial plant cover, and structural diversity of perennial plants were evaluated from spring 1994 through winter 1995 at the Desert Tortoise Research Natural Area (DTNA), in the Mojave Desert, California. Abundance and species richness of birds were higher inside than outside the DTNA, and effects were larger during breeding than wintering seasons and during a high than a low...

Subcutaneous anchor attachment increases retention of radio transmitters on Xantus' and marbled murrelets Subcutaneous anchor attachment increases retention of radio transmitters on Xantus' and marbled murrelets

We modified a subcutaneous anchor attachment and achieved transmitter reten- tion times that exceeded those reported previously for other attachments used on alcids. Traditional suture and epoxy attachment methods were used on Xantus' Murrelets in 1995 and 1996, while the modified attachment was used for Xantus' Murrelets in 1996 and 1997 and Marbled Murrelets in 1997. Modifications...
