What do a large rare Earth element mine, a sprawling desert, volcanic cones and lava tubes, and irrigated farmland have in common? All these land features are visible on one image, selected to represent the milestone of reaching 12 million Level-1 images in the Landsat Collection 2 archive at the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center.

In late 2024, Landsat 9 captured data used to create the image shown below. This image shows a portion of the desert Southwest in the United States, an area that consists of many different landscapes — including agriculture, volcanic cones and lava tubes, mining, and mountainous areas reaching up from the desert.

This newly released USGS EROS Image of the Week discovers all the interesting landscape featured in this image!

How many products are in the EROS Archive?

The interactive Landsat Archive Dashboard will help you answer that question. In the dashboard, you can create custom heatmaps and statistics for the products that interest you, using the various selections such as satellites, sensors, and year ranges.
