Data

Staff of USGS Science Centers in Region 7: Upper Colorado Basin collect a wide variety of natural resource data types including spatial, geologic, hydrologic, and biologic. Data included in USGS-series publications that are not publicly available in USGS databases are published in Data Releases. Short descriptions and links to Data Releases produced by Region 7 Science Centers are shown below.

Percent volumes of insects consumed by the western small-footed bat (Myotis ciliolabrum) captured at Chaco Culture National Historical Park, El Malpais National Monument and El Malpais National Conservation Area, Mesa Verde National Park, Pecos National H

This dataset represents the date and related identification number for each guano sample collected from the western small-footed bat (Myotis ciliolabrum) captured at Chaco Culture National Historical Park, El Malpais National Monument and El Malpais National Conservation Area, Mesa Verde National Park, Pecos National Historical Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and Capulin Volcano...

Evaluations of FSim burn probability maps for pyromes of the conterminous United States based on observed wildfire perimeters

The FSim wildfire simulation model is widely used to generate estimates of burn probability (BP). However, few studies have compared BP models to subsequent wildfires to assess their suitability for estimating near-future wildfire risk. Here, we compared the U.S.D.A. Forest Service’s publicly available BP map for the conterminous U.S. (Short et al., 2020; Dillon et al., 2023) to observed...

Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) natural color imagery and structure-from-motion data products collected at the Marsh-Felch Dinosaur Quarry site in Colorado, July 2024

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Uncrewed Systems Office (NUSO) supported the USGS National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program’s Geoheritage Sites of the Nation Project in July of 2024 with the collection of UAS-based high-resolution imagery of the Marsh-Felch Quarry site at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Garden Park Fossil Area. One of the most complete dinosaur...

Current linear fuel breaks in the sagebrush biome of the western United States (2020) attributed with relevant environmental variables

Unprecedented wildfire frequency fueled by invasive annual grasses threatens sagebrush habitats. To suppress fire and conserve sagebrush, land management agencies have installed ~10,000 km of fuel breaks across the sagebrush ecosystem. The ecological risks and benefits of creating fuel breaks for wildfire suppression are unquantified but must be balanced to avoid accelerating sagebrush...

Vegetation cover from a precipitation manipulation experiment at the Spruce Gulch Wildlife and Research Preserve, Colorado

These data consist of plot-level plant species cover measurements from a precipitation manipulation experiment located in the Spruce Gulch Wildlife and Research Reserve near Boulder, Colorado. This data release consists of absolute percent live foliar cover measurements of all plant species within each plot for the years 2011, 2012, 2013, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. From 2011-2013, plots...

Digital data for a 3-layer geologic model of the conterminous United States using land surface, top of bedrock, and top of basement

This digital dataset compiles a 3-layer geologic model of the conterminous United States by mapping the altitude of three surfaces: land surface, top of bedrock, and top of basement. These surfaces are mapped through the compilation and synthesis of published stratigraphic horizons from numerous topical studies. The mapped surfaces create a 3-layer geologic model with three geomaterials...

Data on flea larvae survival following exposure to black-footed ferret scat

We collected fecal scat pellets from 4 black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) in captivity. The ferrets were fed black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) that had previously consumed 0.005% fipronil grain. Fipronil is an insecticide from the phenylpyrazole chemical family. Specifically, ferrets were fed portions of three prairie dogs (60-80 g/day) for one week. We collected scat...

Field Notebooks from Loch Vale watershed, Rocky Mountain National Park, research from 1981 through 2023

These files consist of scanned field notebooks from long-term research and monitoring conducted in the Loch Vale watershed, Rocky Mountain National Park from June 17, 1981, through September 19, 2023. There are 72 individual PDF files. They are accompanied by a spreadsheet that serves as a pointer to the contents of each notebook, including the range of years in each, start and end dates...

Summary of Responses at the 2021 Colorado River Basin Science and Technology Meetings

In June and July 2021, the Colorado River Basin Actionable and Strategic Integrated Science and Technology (ASIST) pilot team held a series of 12 Science and Technology Collaboration meetings with U.S. Geological Survey science staff to discuss complex integrated science challenges and solutions related to drought in the Colorado River Basin. These meetings were structured to explore...

Modeled habitat suitability for Erigeron rhizomatus (Zuni fleabane)

This raster presents the final outputs from a VisTrails/SAHM workflow to model the potential distribution of Zuni fleabane (Erigeron rhizomatus) in northwestern New Mexico. These models utilized field data of spatially thinned occurrence locations and random background locations. We included a suite of predictors related to soils, topography, vegetation cover, and geology. Details about...

Earth Observation Assessment (EOA) 2023 Tableau Dashboard Data

The Earth Observation Assessment (EOA) is a Congressionally-directed periodic evaluation of the nation's civil Earth observation portfolio. This portfolio comprises both remote and in-situ sensors, operated by both the public and the private sector. The Earth Observation Assessment measures the effectiveness of the civil Earth observation system in meeting federal government objectives...

Digital geospatial database for the Geologic map of the southern Stillwater Range, Nevada

This data set is a geospatial database for the 1:24,000 scale Geologic Map of the Southern Stillwater Range, Nevada (John and others, 2024). It contains all the geologic spatial information and text unit descriptions from the printed map, in the Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) format for digital geologic maps maintained by the USGS’ National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCMGP). Base...
