Landsat 7 ETM+ Thermal Band Detector Alignment

Prior to Collection 2 processing, the Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) thermal band 6 had a small, often difficult to observe, odd-to-even detector misalignment that was present in the along scan direction of the instrument.

Return to Collection 2 Level-1 Data Overview

Landsat Level-1 Product Generation System uses an individual detector’s location within the sensor’s focal plane to adjust each placement of that detector within the final product. Before Collection 2 processing, the location of detectors within the focal plane that were used for product generation were based on pre-launch measurements. When applied to the thermal band, these numbers produced a small shift between the odd and even detectors that at times would even be visible within a product.

Adjustments to the pre-launch measurements were made and applied to Collection 2 data.  The largest adjustment made to any one thermal band detector was approximately 0.16 of a pixel.  The images below are an example.
