Tsunami wavefield for the 2005 northern Sumatra earthquake 1 hour after generation, view to the northwest
This animation shows a model of the tsunami generated by the March 28, 2005 earthquake. The first 2 hours of tsunami propagation are shown. The tsunami is generated between the island of Sumatra and the Sunda Trench. It then propagates outward into the Bay of Bengal and to the east toward Sumatra . Largest offshore tsunami amplitudes are along the coastlines of Nias and Simeulue Islands offshore northern Sumatra.
