Detailed Description

A debris flow recorded by a USGS Landslide Monitoring Station in the 2024 Elk Fire burn area near Dayton, Wyoming. The flow was triggered by intense rainfall during a thunderstorm on the evening of July 15, 2025.

Timestamps

0:00 – Initial flow is visible in channel.  This video begins several minutes after the recording began. [sound of heavy rainfall]

1:08 – Debris flow is visible in the channel. [sound of heavy rainfall and rushing water]

1:14 – Debris flow continues carrying trees, mud, and small boulders.  A tree in the channel is knocked down by the force of the flow. [sound of heavy rainfall and rushing water]

1:23 – Flow is visible outside of the main channel and debris levees start forming adjacent to the main channel. [sound of heavy rainfall and rushing water]

2:06 – Video ends, but flow continues for several more minutes.
