Inventory and management of trespass recreation use at Upper Delaware and Scenic and Recreational River Inventory and management of trespass recreation use at Upper Delaware and Scenic and Recreational River

Recreational trespass on private lands within the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, located along the eastern border between Pennsylvania and New York, prompted this survey of recreational trespass sites. The National Park Service has been mandated to manage river recreational use within its boundaries but land ownership shall remain predominantly private. This survey was...

Isolation of a reovirus from coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in Oregon, USA Isolation of a reovirus from coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in Oregon, USA

Reoviruses isolated from aquatic animals share certain common characteristics: (1) a typical reovirus-like morphology which shows an icosahedral particle with a double capsid that is approximately 75 nm in diameter; (2) a genome with eleven segments of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) distributed as three large, three medium and five small segments with a total molecular weight of...

Lead contamination of golden eagles Aquila chrysaetos within the range of the California condor Gymnogyps californianus Lead contamination of golden eagles Aquila chrysaetos within the range of the California condor Gymnogyps californianus

Blood samples were taken from 66 golden eagles from June 1985 to January 1986 and analyzed for their lead content. Thirty-nine percent had blood lead levels greater than 0.2 ppm, indicating exposure to environmental lead. Within the exposed group, 3 had blood levels exceeding 0.6 ppm and one exceeded 1.0 ppm. These data suggest that lead, probably in the form of shot, bullets, or bullet

Mechanisms of Cenozoic tectonic rotation, Pacific Northwest Convergent Margin, U.S.A. Mechanisms of Cenozoic tectonic rotation, Pacific Northwest Convergent Margin, U.S.A.

Large clockwise rotations (15–80°) are characteristic of Cenozoic volcanic and sedimentary rocks along the convergent margin of the northwestern United States. Abundant paleomagnetic data from 62–12 m.y. old rocks in forearc, arc, and backarc regions show that rotation increases with age and with proximity to the coast. Paleomagnetic and structural studies both support dextral shear as a

Mineralogic and textural relations in deeply buried rocks of the Simpson Group (Middle Ordovician)--implications in diagenesis and petroleum geology Mineralogic and textural relations in deeply buried rocks of the Simpson Group (Middle Ordovician)--implications in diagenesis and petroleum geology

The mineral composition and petrography of sandstones, shales, carbonates, and intermediate lithologies were determined on 112 core samples of the Middle Ordovician Simpson Group in the Sunray DX Parker No. 1 Mazur well, Grady County, Oklahoma. Core was recovered from present depths of about 15,900-17,200 ft and included all or parts of the Bromide, Tulip Creek, McLish, Oil Creek, and...

Mississippi Alluvial Valley Mississippi Alluvial Valley

Available data are summarized according to the following major topics: (1) characteristics of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV); (2) waterfowl populations associated with the MAV; (3) habitat requirements of migrating and wintering waterfowl in the MAV; (4) current habitat management practices in the MAV, including croplands, moist-soil impoundments, and forested wetlands; (5) status...

Monitoring bird populations with Breeding Bird Survey and atlas data Monitoring bird populations with Breeding Bird Survey and atlas data

The principal means of monitoring avian species in North America since 1966 is the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS). Nearly 2000 random roadside rouleS of 50 3-minule stops each are run once each summer by experienced observers. Two-year and 10ng-lerm population trends have been calculated for 250 of the more common species. We show how Breeding Bird Atlas dala for lWO periods of time can also...

Northern Great Plains Northern Great Plains

We describe waterfowl populations and habitats in the Northern Great Plains; relate habitats and habitat managemnet pratices to annual cycle requirements of migrating and wintering ducks and geese; and suggest management approaches for wintering and migrating waterfowl.

On inter-tidal transport equation On inter-tidal transport equation

The transports of solutes, sediments, nutrients, and other tracers are fundamental to the interactive physical, chemical, and biological processes in estuaries. The characteristic time scales for most estuarine biological and chemical processes are on the order of several tidal cycles or longer. To address the long-term transport mechanism meaningfully, the formulation of an inter-tidal
