NLHRR Interest Groups (IGs)

Interest Groups (IGs) were first described in the National Strategy for Landslide Loss Reduction (2022) as topically focused subgroups where members might have deeper conversations and engage in collective work on specific topics.

Driven by interests of NLHRR members, eight IGs were initiated in spring 2025, six topical and two regional in focus. The IGs are led by volunteer co-leaders and typically meet virtually on a ~quarterly basis, or more frequently if needed. A bit about each IG is provided below. If you would like more information about any of the Interest Groups or if you think you might like to join one, please send an email to Srhall@usgs.gov. Note: to join the NLHRR and IGs you must be a professional working on landslide hazards or aspects of risk reduction related to landslide hazards.

Active NLHRR Interest Groups:

Intermountain West Region: Address common objectives among landslide hazards professionals in the Intermountain West region of the U.S. such as landslide inventory workflows and research topics, regional cross-agency collaboration, and lessons learned.

Landslide Event Response and Recovery: Establish and promote best practices for response and recovery operations at the local, state, and federal level to improve landslide response and recovery operations through coordination, collaboration, and education.

Landslide Mapping and Modeling: Gather practitioners to share knowledge, expertise, and experience, and to broaden exposure to new techniques. Landslide mapping includes: inventory mapping, event mapping, map attributing, and techniques for mapping landslides. Landslide modeling includes: triggering modeling, runout modeling, regional susceptibility modeling, and techniques for landslide modeling.

Landslide Outreach and Education: Collectively develop guidance materials that will help scientists communicate information about landslide hazards to the public, other professionals, or the media. These materials may include: informational pamphlets or documents, template story maps, or a list of talking points to use during an event.

Eastern U.S. Region: Foster collaboration among landslide hazards professionals in the Eastern region of the U.S., share best practices in research and data dissemination, and promote landslide awareness.

Landslide Mitigation and Preparedness: Drawing from existing materials, knowledge, and experience, this group will collectively consider best practices in translating landslide science into guidance for planners at all levels. To lay the groundwork for the creation of guidance materials, the IG will compile and review current policies and practices.

Landslide Forecasting and Warning: Provide a forum to discuss current needs and challenges in landslide forecasting and warning and exchange experiences and lessons learned. Together the group will compile a library/resource for relevant published media (e.g., peer-reviewed journal articles, presentations).

Landslide Loss: Collaboratively identify: (1) potential uses for and applications of landslide loss information, (2) best practices for the collection and management of these data, and (3) new avenues for data collection.

If you are interested in joining an Interest Group (IG):

Please send an email to Sarah Hall (srhall@usgs.gov)with “Landslide Working Group” in the subject line, and in the body of the email, indicate which IG(s) you are interested in learning more about or joining and you will be put in touch with the Co-Leaders.
