Atrazine and metolachlor occurrence in shallow ground water of the United States, 1993 to 1995: Relations to explanatory factors Atrazine and metolachlor occurrence in shallow ground water of the United States, 1993 to 1995: Relations to explanatory factors
Since 1991, the U.S. Geological Survey has been conducting the National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program to determine the quality of the Nation's water resources. In an effort to obtain a better understanding of why pesticides are found in shallow ground water on a national scale, a set of factors likely to affect the fate and transport of two herbicides in the subsurface were...

Stabilized liquid membrane device (SLMD) for the passive, integrative sampling of labile metals in water Stabilized liquid membrane device (SLMD) for the passive, integrative sampling of labile metals in water
A stabilized liquid membrane device (SLMD) is described for potential use as an in situ, passive, integrative sampler for cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in natural waters. The SLMD (patent pending) consists of a 2.5-cm-wide by 15-cm-long strip of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) layflat tubing containing 1 mL of an equal mixture (v/v) of...

Dynamics of pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus duorarum) recruitment potential in relation to salinity and temperature in Florida Bay Dynamics of pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus duorarum) recruitment potential in relation to salinity and temperature in Florida Bay
Progress is reported in relating upstream water management and freshwater flow to Florida Bay to a valuable commercial fishery for pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus duorarum), which has major nursery grounds in Florida Bay. Changes in freshwater inflow are expected to affect salinity patterns in the bay, so the effect of salinity and temperature on the growth, survival, and subsequent...

The role of the egg jelly coat in protecting Hyla regilla and Bufo canorus embryos from Ultraviolet B radiation during development The role of the egg jelly coat in protecting Hyla regilla and Bufo canorus embryos from Ultraviolet B radiation during development
Background. Previous studies have suggested that Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation may play a role in amphibian population declines. Some of these studies also indicate that egg hatching success is unaltered in some species of anurans as a result of UVB exposure. It has been proposed that the egg mass jelly provides photoprotection to the developing embryos. Methods. Direct...

Water resources data Texas, water year 2001, volume 6. Ground water Water resources data Texas, water year 2001, volume 6. Ground water
Water-resources data for the 2001 water year for Texas consists of records of stage, discharge, and water quality of streams; stage and contents in lakes and reservoirs; and water levels and water quality in wells. Volume 6 contains water levels for 908 observation wells and water-quality data for 155 monitoring wells. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System...

Flow-velocity, water-temperature and conductivity data collected in Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park, during 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 wet seasons Flow-velocity, water-temperature and conductivity data collected in Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park, during 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 wet seasons
A project within the U. S. Geological Survey Place- Based Studies Program is focused on investigation of ?Forcing Effects on Flow Structure in Vegetated Wetlands of the Everglades.? Data-collection efforts conducted within this project at three locations in Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park, during the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 wet seasons are described in this report...

SIMSPAR model simulates the impact of hydrology on the Cape Sable seaside sparrow SIMSPAR model simulates the impact of hydrology on the Cape Sable seaside sparrow
SIMSPAR is a spatially-explicit, individual-based model designed as a management and evaluation tool for the Cape Sable seaside sparrow (Ammodramus maritimus mirabilis), an endangered subspecies of seaside sparrow that lives exclusively in the southern Everglades. The model is designed to simulate how changes in hydrology across the nesting area of the sparrow is likely to affect the...

Patterns and processes of wetland loss in coastal Louisiana are complex: A reply to Turner 2001. Estimating the indirect effects of hydrologic change on wetland loss: If the Earth is curved, then how would we know it? Patterns and processes of wetland loss in coastal Louisiana are complex: A reply to Turner 2001. Estimating the indirect effects of hydrologic change on wetland loss: If the Earth is curved, then how would we know it?
The coastal wetlands of Louisiana comprise a vast expanse of marine to freshwater wetland plant communities interspersed w-ith shallow bays and bayous. These wetlands were built by processes associated with the present-day Mississippi and Atchatfalaya River deltas and older distributaries occupied by the river over the past 7,000 }rears. The high rates of wetland loss identified in this...

Canopy disturbance patterns in a bottomland hardwood forest in northeast Arkansas, USA Canopy disturbance patterns in a bottomland hardwood forest in northeast Arkansas, USA
We characterized canopy disturbance patterns in a bottomland hardwood forest and identified linkages to tree species characteristics and interannual flooding patterns. We located 116 newly formed canopy gaps created by 136 gapmakers of 13 species. Over 83% of the gapmakers were snapped or uprooted (i.e., windthrow). The probability of any given gapmaker snapping or uprooting differed...
