Sarah Spring is Chief of Staff at the Western Ecological Research Center.
Sarah Spring has worked for the USGS since 1998. She began her Federal career as a Biological Science Technician and worked at the Davis field station as a biologist for over 10 years, then moved to WERC's Headquarters office, where she assisted with reimbursable agreements and other administrative tasks. Sarah spent a few years in the Regional Director's office as a Program Analyst, where she had an opportunity to gain insight on how policy relates to what staff does at the science center level. She then returned to WERC and now serves as the Chief of Staff.

Effects of wetland management on carrying capacity of diving ducks and shorebirds in a coastal estuary
With global loss of natural wetlands, managed wetlands increasingly support energy requirements for wintering shorebirds and waterfowl. Despite numerous studies of avian bioenergetics in freshwater systems, less is known of the energetic capacity of estuarine systems. In San Francisco Bay, managed saline ponds converted from former commercial salt evaporation ponds form part of the largest wetlandAuthorsL. Arriana Brand, John Y. The Salton Sea is critically important for wintering and breeding waterbirds, but faces an uncertain future due to water delivery reductions imposed by the Interstate and Federal Quantification Settlement Agreement of 2003. The current preferred alternative for wetland restoration at the Salton Sea is saline habitat impoundments created to mitigate the anticipated loss of wetland habitat. In 2006,AuthorsA. Effects of inhalation of volatilized trichloroethylene (TCE) or perchloroethylene (PCE) were assessed based on the health and population size of wild, burrowing mammals at Edwards Air Force Base (CA, USA). Organic soil-vapor concentrations were measured at three sites with aquifer contamination of TCE or PCE of 5.5 to 77 mg/L and at two uncontaminated reference sites. Western Ecological Research Center - Headquarters
WERC is headquartered on the campus of California State University Sacramento and is aptly known as the ‘center without walls.’ The Center's headquarters houses management and administrative staff that support the dispersed science structure of WERC scientists which are located at or near ecosystems aligned with their expertise and often co-located with or near DOI partners at field stations in...
