Size-dependent, sex-dependent and seasonal changes in insulin-lige growth-factor-I in the loggerhead sea turtle Size-dependent, sex-dependent and seasonal changes in insulin-lige growth-factor-I in the loggerhead sea turtle
This study examines size-dependent, sex-dependent, and seasonal fluctuations in plasma insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) concentrations in loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Loggerhead turtles (n = 158) were captured in shrimp trawler nets during a 12-month survey in Cape Canaveral Channel, Florida. Plasma samples were analyzed using a validated heterologous radioimmunoassay...

Toxicity and bioaccumulation of sediment-associated contaminants using freshwater invertebrates: A review of methods and applications Toxicity and bioaccumulation of sediment-associated contaminants using freshwater invertebrates: A review of methods and applications
This paper reviews recent developments in methods for evaluating the toxicity and bioaccumulation of contaminants associated with freshwater sediments and summarizes example case studies demonstrating the application of these methods. Over the past decade, research has emphasized development of more specific testing procedures for conducting 10-d toxicity tests with the amphipod Hyalella...

Organochlorine residues in bat guano from nine Mexican caves, 1991 Organochlorine residues in bat guano from nine Mexican caves, 1991
Samples of bat guano, primarily from Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis), were collected at nine bat roosts in caves in northern and eastern Mexico and analysed for organochlorine residues. DDE, the most abundant residue found in each cave, was highest (0.99 p.p.m. dry weight) at Ojuela Cave, Durango. Other studies of DDE in bat guano indicate that this concentration is too...

Occurrence of active and inactive herbicide ingredients at selected sites in Iowa Occurrence of active and inactive herbicide ingredients at selected sites in Iowa
The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of herbicide active and inactive ingredients (primarily volatile organic compounds) at four selected sites in Iowa representing drain tiles, observation wells, or lysimeters. Water samples were collected monthly and bi-monthly before and after herbicide applications in 1991, respectively. They were analyzed for seven...

Water resources data, Iowa, water year 1994 Water resources data, Iowa, water year 1994
Water resources data for Iowa for the 1994 water year consist of records of stage, discharge, and water quality of streams; stage, contents, and water quality of lakes and reservoirs; ground water levels and water quality of ground-water wells. This report contains discharge records for 115 gaging stations; stage or contents for 8 lakes and reservoirs; water quality for 6 stream-gaging...

Delineation of flooding within the upper Mississippi River Basin, 1993 — Flood of June 29-September 18, 1993, in Iowa City and vicinity, Iowa Delineation of flooding within the upper Mississippi River Basin, 1993 — Flood of June 29-September 18, 1993, in Iowa City and vicinity, Iowa
The hydrologic investigations atlas shows the areas in and around Iowa City, Iowa, that were flooded by the Iowa River in 1993. This map also depicts the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 100-year flood boundaries. The drainage basin of the Iowa River at Iowa City received well over 100 percent of normal rainfall in June, July, and August, 1993. At the Cedar Rapids airport...

Technique for estimating the 2- to 500-year flood discharges on unregulated streams in rural Missouri Technique for estimating the 2- to 500-year flood discharges on unregulated streams in rural Missouri
A generalized least-squares regression technique was used to relate the 2- to 500-year flood discharges from 278 selected streamflow-gaging stations to statistically significant basin characteristics. The regression relations (estimating equations) were defined for three hydrologic regions (I, II, and III) in rural Missouri. Ordinary least-squares regression analyses indicate that...

Monitoring flooding in coastal wetlands by using radar imagery and ground-based measurements Monitoring flooding in coastal wetlands by using radar imagery and ground-based measurements
Satellite radar was used in a Florida Juncus roemerianus marsh to map tidal flooding, a critical control of coastal vegetation distribution. Radar images taken during a time of near-continuous recordings of ground-based hydrology measurements directly linked marsh flooding to lowered radar returns and indicated a negative covariation between flood frequency and radar return. Flood-extent...
