Task 1-Grand Traverse Bay Quaternary Geologic Mapping

Science Center Objects

The area encompassed by Task 1 includes the counties around Grand Traverse Bay in Michigan, with focus on Grand Traverse, Antrim, Charlevoix, and Emmet Counties.  The primary objective of Task 1 is to produce a seamless, zoomable geologic framework map geodatabase in GeMS format that includes the following data: Quaternary surficial map units on the basis of new LiDAR data; Quaternary sediment thickness and subsurface characterization tied to borehole and geophysical data; subcropping bedrock geology (including areas beneath the Great Lakes that are integrated with bedrock exposures); borehole data; Great Lakes bathymetry; grids of the upper surfaces of extant Paleozoic strata; and subsurface lithologies constrained by available borehole data.   A secondary objective of Task 1 is to evaluate Quaternary glacial geomorphic, allostratigraphic, and depositional models, and to produce an objective analysis of the range of uncertainty and robustness of glacial geologic and geomorphic interpretive models of erosion and deposition. Such an analysis is needed to support the creation and interpretation of geologic framework geodatabases for glaciated areas.

Great Lakes Geologic Mapping Task 1

This image was constructed in ArcMap of the ongoing work in Task 1. The onshore lines and polygons were generated by our team and the colored offshore bathymetry in Lake Michigan is publicly available NOAA imagery that was georeferenced by our team.
