The USGS New Jersey Water Science Center conducts research and investigations related to topics such as groundwater and surface-water quality related to anthropogenic and agricultural activities, hydraulic and hydrologic modeling, tracking the movement of groundwater contamination, groundwater resource assessments and modeling, ecological assessments and response to urbanization, and estimating water-use for human and ecological needs. The research and investigations provide the scientific knowledge that engineers, planners and managers can used to make informed water-resources decisions.

Filter Total Items: 65Arsenic in the Wallkill River Basin
Concentrations of arsenic in four segments (reaches) of the Wallkill River and one segment of the Papakating Creek (a major tributary to the Wallkill River) have been found to exceed the New Jersey surface-water-quality standard of 0.0170 micrograms per liter. As a result, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) New Jersey Water Science Center, in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of...National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Projects in New Jersey Archive
These archive pages document the first phase of the National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program (Cycle I) studies in New Jersey, including summary documents, work plans, study sites, maps and publications.Barnegat Bay Modeling
The development of hydrodynamic and water-quality models is proposed to provide NJDEP with the necessary analytical capability to address critical management issues relating to water quality and eutrophication in the Barnegat Bay-Little Egg Harbor Estuary. The primary objectives of this proposed study are to examine the water-quality causes of eutrophication in the BB-LEH Estuary and evaluate...Hopewell Long-Term Monitoring
The pace of development in Hopewell Township increased substantially in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Concurrent with this has been an increased awareness of the township’s finite water resources and the potential for environmental degradation from increased ground-water withdrawals and reduced ground-water recharge. The goal of this project is to provide a long-term, easily accessed data base...Estimation of Low-flow Statistics for Ungaged Stream Sites on New Jersey Streams
To protect existing water supplies, to plan for future water supplies, and to protect and enhance the aquatic ecology, the NJDEP and USGS, through cooperative agreements, have been developing tools and strategies that can assist in allocating the water resources of the state among competing needs. One such tool is the New Jersey Hydroecological Assessment Tool (NJHAT) that can calculate 171 flow...Evaluation of OWCs in Ground Water Near Septic Systems in NJ
Demands on ground water resources in New Jersey require the availability of high quality water for multiple uses. Water resources planning must address these and other needs to insure a water supply of sufficient quality capable of meeting present and future needs throughout the State. The development and implementation of a study on PPCPs and OWCs released to shallow ground water from large scale...DRBC Assistance
USGS will provide technical support to the Delaware River Basin Commission in preparation of the State of the Estuary / State of the Basin Technical reports during calendar years 2010 and 2011.Cumberland County Ground Water
Ground water is an important source of water supply and has a critical role in maintaining the health of aquatic freshwater and estuarine ecosystems in the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Coastal drainage basins of southeast New Jersey, including the Lower Maurice River and Cohansey Rive. In the coming years, the need for water supply is expected to grow and the priority of maintaining dependent...Barnegat Bay Nutrient Loading and Eutrophication
Nitrogen loading from the BB-LEH watershed and overlying airshed has resulted in shifts in ecosystem structure and function of the estuary reflected by the repeated occurrence of detrimental toxic and nuisance algal blooms, loss of essential seagrass habitat, and declining fisheries. Most of the nitrogen load enters the estuary from watershed surface-water inflow. While nitrogen loading has been...Assistance to DODEC Facilities in NJ
The objective of this project is to provide technical support to U.S. Department of Defense (Army, Navy, Air Force). The choice of sites requiring USGS technical assistance will be made in consultation with base/facility personnel.Allocation Analysis
Development of water supply is a dynamic condition, and demand areas may shift, or quality or quantity concerns may change in a former study area. This program will address the need of the N.J. Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to understand the possible effects of proposed or planned withdrawals within these previously studied areas. The general objective of this program is to...Penobscot Indian Nation Database
A database was developed by the USGS for the Penobscot Indian Nation (PIN) in 1999 to store water-quality and associated data. A data-entry application in MS Access was also provided. The resulting database and data-entry application are referred to as the Penobscot Indian Nation Environmental (PINE) database. For FY11 the USGS has been requested for development assistance to further improve the...
