Technique for implanting radio transmitters subcutaneously in day-old ducklings Technique for implanting radio transmitters subcutaneously in day-old ducklings
We developed and evaluated a surgical procedure for implanting radio transmitters in 1-d-old Canvasback (Aythya valisineria) ducklings. Transmitters (1.5 g) were implanted subcutaneously on the back of ducklings while under a general anesthetic, isoflurane, within a few hours of hatching. Evaluations indicate that the procedure is a reliable method for radio-marking ducklings.

Implanting intra-abdominal radiotransmitters with external whip antennas in ducks Implanting intra-abdominal radiotransmitters with external whip antennas in ducks
We developed and evaluated a surgical procedure for implanting intra-abdominal radiotransmitters with external whip antennas in captive mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). Transmitters were implanted in the abdominal cavity and the antennas exited through the caudal abdominal wall and skin. Birds with implanted transmitters developed mild to moderate localized air sac reactions. These...

Canvasback mortality from illegal hunting on the upper Mississippi River Canvasback mortality from illegal hunting on the upper Mississippi River
To quantify the consequences of local hunting on illegal kill of canvasbacks (Aythya valisineria), we studied the behavior of hunters on a 646-ha area open to duck hunting (closed to canvasback hunting) on Lake Onalaska, Navigation Pool 7, Wisconsin, during the 1991 and 1992 waterfowl hunting seasons. Law enforcement officers observed 258 hunting parties for 419 hours. Of 94 hunting...

Water resources data, Michigan, water year 1995 Water resources data, Michigan, water year 1995
Water resources data for the 1995 water year for Michigan consists of records of stage, discharge, and water quality of streams; stage and contents of lakes and reservoirs; and ground water levels. This report contains discharge records for 148 streamflow-gaging stations; stage only records for 2 stream-gaging stations and 19 lake-gaging stations; stage and contents for 4 lakes and...

Hydrogeologic framework of Mississippian rocks in the central Lower Peninsula of Michigan Hydrogeologic framework of Mississippian rocks in the central Lower Peninsula of Michigan
Sedimentary rocks of Mississippian age form the lower part of a regional aquifer system in the central Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Strata of the Michigan Formation, the Marshall Sandstone, and the Coldwater Shale were subdivided into an aquifer and two confining units on the basis of hydraulic properties. The Michigan confining unit consists of shale, limestone, dolomite, gypsum...

Summary of biological investigations relating to water quality in the Western Lake Michigan Drainages, Wisconsin and Michigan Summary of biological investigations relating to water quality in the Western Lake Michigan Drainages, Wisconsin and Michigan
This report summarizes aquatic biological studies relevant to water-quality assessment that have been done in the Western Lake Michigan Drainages from 1891 to 1996. The objective of the summary was to compile sources of biological data for the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment Program. The studies are divided into four categories: (1) populations and community...

Temporal and vertical distribution of total ammonia nitrogen and un-ionized ammonia nitrogen in sediment pore water from the upper Mississippi River Temporal and vertical distribution of total ammonia nitrogen and un-ionized ammonia nitrogen in sediment pore water from the upper Mississippi River
We examined the temporal and vertical distribution of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and un-ionized ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) in sediment pore water and compared the temporal patterns of TAN and NH3-N concentrations in overlying surface water with those in pore water. Pore water was obtained by core extraction and subsequent centrifugation. We measured TAN concentrations and calculated NH3...

Physical characteristics of stream subbasins in the upper Minnesota River basin, west-central Minnesota, northeastern South Dakota and southeastern North Dakota Physical characteristics of stream subbasins in the upper Minnesota River basin, west-central Minnesota, northeastern South Dakota and southeastern North Dakota
Data that describe the physical characteristics of stream subbasins upstream from selected points on streams in the Upper Minnesota River Basin, located in west-central Minnesota, north-eastern South Dakota, and southeastern North Dakota, are presented in this report. The physical characteristics are the drainage area of the subbasin, the percentage area of the subbasin covered only by...

Relation of fracture orientation to linear terrain features, anisotropic transmissivity, and seepage to streams in the karst Prairie du Chien Group, southeastern Minnesota Relation of fracture orientation to linear terrain features, anisotropic transmissivity, and seepage to streams in the karst Prairie du Chien Group, southeastern Minnesota
Ground-water flow in the karst-terrane aquifers of southeastern Minnesota is not well defined. Variable fracture patterns in the bedrock affect permeability. Techniques to predict the effects of fracture patterns on ground-water flow in the karst-terrane aquifers of southeastern Minnesota are unavailable. The use of such techniques may be useful to officials responsible for the...

Pesticide amounts are small in streams in the Red River of the North Basin, 1993-94 Pesticide amounts are small in streams in the Red River of the North Basin, 1993-94
Pesticides are used extensively in the largely agricultural Red River of the North (Red River) Basin, but, unlike many other agricultural basins, only small amounts are routinely detected in samples from streams in the basin. The pesticides detected comprise less than 2 percent of the amount applied and usually are at concentrations far less than established drinking water standards...
