Some blood chemistry values for five Chesapeake Bay area fishes Some blood chemistry values for five Chesapeake Bay area fishes
Blood samples from gizzard shad, largemouth bass, white perch, pumpkinseed, and toadfish were analyzed for hemoglobin, total plasma protein, total plasma cholesterol, and ion concentrations of plasma sodium, potassium, and chloride. The hemoglobin concentration and total plasma cholesterol found in a given species seem to have positive correlation with the customary activity level of that...

Induced recharge of an artesian glacial-drift aquifer at Kalamazoo, Michigan Induced recharge of an artesian glacial-drift aquifer at Kalamazoo, Michigan
As part of a program for managing its ground-water supply, the city of Kalamazoo has constructed induced-recharge facilities at the sites of several of its well fields. To determine the benefits of induced recharge in a water-management program, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the city, conducted a series of field experiments at a city well field (Station 9). The 12...

Some effects of sublethal concentrations of sodium arsenite on bluegills and the aquatic environment Some effects of sublethal concentrations of sodium arsenite on bluegills and the aquatic environment
Bluegills were exposed to sodium arsenite at various concentrations and treatment frequencies in outdoor pools. The effects of the treatments on the fish and invertebrates in the pools were assessed. Applications totaling 4.0 ppm or more of NaAsO2 during the experiment were reflected in reduced survival and growth of the fish, with immature fish being affected to a greater degree than...

Diuron, fenuron, monuron, neburon, and TCA mixtures as aquatic herbicides in fish habitats Diuron, fenuron, monuron, neburon, and TCA mixtures as aquatic herbicides in fish habitats
The substituted urea herbicides were rated according to their effectiveness as aquatic herbicides in this order: diuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea], monuron [3-(p-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea], neburon [1-butyl-3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methlyurea] and TCA(trichloroacetic acid) mixtures with them. They showed greatest potential in controlling certain aquatic plants in pre...
