Spatial and temporal heterogeneity in metallic elements in industrialized aquatic bird habitat Spatial and temporal heterogeneity in metallic elements in industrialized aquatic bird habitat

This study examined the potential for exposure of migratory aquatic birds to contaminants in highly industrialized habitats at Baltimore Harbor, Maryland. Seven nearshore, benthic sites were sampled every 3 or 6 months from June 1987 to December 1988. Twenty metallic elements were measured in composites (i.e. annelids, amphipods, and isopods were pooled), clams, and sediments. Elevated

Landscape management challenges on the California Channel Islands Landscape management challenges on the California Channel Islands

Managing for sustained biodiversity and restoration of natural habitat has become increasingly important over the last two decades, first as mitigation for development (especially in wetlands), and , more recently in natural areas. The latter has come about as land managing agencies like the Department of Defense and Bureau of Land Management have seen the need to reverse the impact of...

Parasitology meets ecology on its own terms: Margolis et al. revisited Parasitology meets ecology on its own terms: Margolis et al. revisited

We consider 27 population and community terms used frequently by parasitologists when describing the ecology of parasites. We provide suggestions for various terms in an attempt to foster consistent use and to make terms used in parasite ecology easier to interpret for those who study free-living organisms. We suggest strongly that authors, whether they agree or disagree with us, provide...

A night-lighting technique for at-sea capture of Xantus' Murrelets A night-lighting technique for at-sea capture of Xantus' Murrelets

We captured 575 Xantus' Murrelets (Synthliboramphus hypoleucus) with spotlights and dip nets at 3 islands in the Southern California Channel Islands during April and May of 1995-1997. Working at night (2100-0500 h), 3-person teams in inflatable boats located murrelets with a spotlight and captured them in dip nets from the waters near known breeding colonies at Santa Barbara, Anacapa...
