National estimates of annual and cumulative bat fatalities at onshore wind energy facilities from 1981-2024 and species-specific relative fatality risk maps across the conterminous United States

October 26, 2026

This data release contains estimates of bat fatalities at onshore wind energy facilities across the conterminous United States for 10 bat species: hoary bat (

Lasiurus cinereus

, LACI), silver-haired bat (

Lasionycteris noctivagans

, LANO), eastern red bat (

Lasiurus borealis

, LABO), big brown bat (

Eptesicus fuscus

, EPFU), little brown bat (

Myotis lucifugus

, MYLU), tricolored bat (

Perimyotis subflavus

, PESU), evening bat (

Nycticeius humeralis

, NYHU), Seminole bat (

Lasiurus seminolus

, LASE), Indiana bat (

Myotis sodalis

, MYSO), and northern long-eared bat (

Myotis septentrionalis

, MYSE). Fatality estimates were generated with an adapted hierarchical Bayesian multispecies N-mixture model fit to post-construction monitoring reports from wind facilities in the conterminous United States. The model was applied annually from 1981 to 2024 retrospectively across all U.S. wind energy facilities. This release contains three comma-separated value (CSV) files summarizing (1) annual estimated bat fatalities and (2) cumulative estimated bat fatalities from 1981 through 2024, each reported per species and summed across all 10 species with the posterior mean and the 2.5%, 50%, and 97.5% posterior quantiles, and (3) posterior summary statistics for the fitted parameters of the multispecies N-mixture model, annotated by parameter family, species, covariate, and season, to support reporting of effect sizes and credible intervals in publications and downstream analyses. A companion GeoPackage dataset provides the species-specific median relative fatality risk (multiplicative effect on the baseline fatality rate) and 95% credible interval (2.5% and 97.5% quantiles) at each cell of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL; now the National Laboratory of the Rockies, NLR) 11.5 kilometer (km) x 11.5 km wind energy potential grid across the conterminous United States. Full documentation, model code, and reproducible analysis are available in the associated software release (Labuzzetta et al., 2026, version 1.1.0; https://doi.org/10.5066/P138DAXS).
