I recovered a bird band with illegible numbers. How can I get the band etched so I can read and report the numbers?

Most bird bands are made of an aluminum alloy and have unique numbers engraved. These numbers can wear off with time to the point that one or more numbers become illegible. The time that it takes for a bird band number to wear off depends on the habits of that bird species and the amount of time that it spends in the water. For instance, a band on a Mallard might wear off one number in 6 to 8 years, while all the numbers on the band of a diving bird (like a Redhead) might wear off in the same amount of time.

If you find a bird band with one or more illegible numbers, mail it to the Bird Banding Laboratory to be cleaned with oxidative chemicals (etched). Even if the band is completely worn, we can typically retrieve the number(s). Regardless of the outcome, the band will be returned to you through the mail. We will also email a Certificate of Appreciation to you with the banding details of the bird.

Flatten the band and tape it between two pieces of cardboard or, if you want to keep it round, place it in a small box. Good packaging is important to make sure the band does not cut the envelope while shipping and get lost in the postal system. Please send along with the band your mailing address, email address and the information on how, when, and where you found the band.

Gravure d’une bague usée ou d’une bague illisible

La plupart des bagues sont faites d’un alliage d’aluminium. Les chiffres sont gravés dans la bague et peuvent s’effacer au fil du temps. Chez un Canard colvert, un chiffre d’une bague moyenne s’efface après 8 à 10 ans, alors que chez un Fuligule à tête rouge, aucun chiffre n’est lisible après cette même période. L’usure des bagues dépend grandement du temps qu’un oiseau passe dans l’eau à la recherche de nourriture. Certaines espèces semblent user leurs bagues plus rapidement que d’autres selon leur comportement d’alimentation.

Si vous trouvez une bague d’oiseau dont un chiffre ou plus s’est effacé (ou si le numéro de la bague est percé de grenaille), envoyez-la par la poste au Bird Banding Laboratory pour être gravée. Le numéro peut être récupéré dans la plupart des cas. Les bagues sont gravées au moyen d’une solution d’acide. Elles sont plus minces là où le numéro a été gravé. Il suffit de rincer la bague pour distinguer le numéro. La bague vous sera retournée lorsque son numéro aura été déterminé.
