Viruses at the Beach

Detailed Description

Illustration created by Ben Siebers, USGS scientist, for journal article "Human and bovine viruses and bacteria at three Great Lakes beaches: Environmental variable associations and health risk".

For this study, waterborne pathogens were measured at three beaches on Lakes Michigan.  The drawing is an early example of showing viruses, something invisible to the eye, through their microscopic form entering the environment in which we reside.  It is a powerful image showing these “larger than life” viruses looming around children playing at the beach.  It clearly depicts the viruses’ sources – water treatment facilities, sewer, and birds.  The image is drawn based sampling sites included in the study.
