Exploration and mapping are important for understanding how the earth works. Geologic mapping today is often done with a combination of satellite, remote sensing, as well as field work. You can get a lot of information from remote sensing, but you still need the ground truth, and if you don't do that, you can make mistakes. The danger of misidentifying is coming up an erroneous scenario. It's hard to go outside. It's cold. It's wet. But, the risk is just being complacent. Geologic mapping is important because it can tell us about economic resources and geologic hazards. This country's mapped in a broad sense, but the details are lacking for much of the country. If we don't understand the earth and how it functions, it's harder for us to predict what might happen in the future.
