On September 17 at 8:36 p.m. HST, a magnitude-4.1 earthquake occurred 3 mi (5 km) south of Pāhala on the Island of Hawaiʻi at a depth of 8 mi (12 km) below sea level. The earthquake had no apparent impact on either Mauna Loa or Kīlauea. View All Messages.

Kīlauea summit deflation slowed and stopped by 9:00 a.m. HST. UWD tiltmeter remains flat. No surface deformation detected outside of the summit; heavy rain is producing a false inflationary peak on the Pu‘u‘ō‘ō (POC) tiltmeter. View All Messages.

The north-south-west vents have had consistent strong glow and flames all night. Summit tremor and tilt began decreasing around 5 pm HST and the new vents stagnated at 8:30 pm HST. No anomalous activity or seismicity detected elsewhere. View All Messages.

Another new vent, vent 6, opened on the floor of Halema'uma'u crater just to the north of vent 5 and was visible just before 6 pm HST. The start of a small summit tilt drop around 5 pm HST may correlate with the opening of vent 6. View All Messages.

Episodic eruption at Kīlauea summit

This eruption is within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Lava flows are contained to the caldera, but fallout from the lava fountains can affect communities downwind.
