Ep. 23 precursory activity continues. Small lava fountains and lava overflows from north vent started around 11:30 a.m. Saturday May 24. Sustained fountaining could begin at any time through the weekend.

Episode 23 precursory activity continues to increase, with lava spattering and strong glow visible in both vents. Large yellow flames also observed in north vent.

Episode 23 precursory low-level activity is increasing. Intermittent dome fountaining begain in the north vent at 1:17 PM. Low-level activity is expected to continue increasing before the onset of sustained fountains.

Episode 22 ended at 3:29 pm HST on May 16 after 10 hours and 16 minutes of high fountains. Fountain heights from the north vent started dropping a few minutes before the end. Approximately 5 million cubic yards of lava were erupted.

Fountains from the north vent reached a maximum of 1000 feet around 6 am HST. Since that time fountain heights have dropped, varying between 300 and 500 feet high. Gas plume reaches 5,000-10,000 feet and is moving away from populated areas.

The transition to episode 22 high fountains occured at 5:13 am HST when fountain height and tremor increased along with the onset of rapid deflation. Current fountains are sustained 650 feet (200 meters) with peak of 800 feet (250 meters).

Episode 22 of the ongoing Halema'uma'u eruption began at 4:45 am HST when lava from low dome fountains overflowed the north vent. The fountains continued to grow over the next half hour to over 500 feet high (150 meters).
