Depositional and tectonic framework of the rift basins of Lake Baikal from multichannel seismic data Depositional and tectonic framework of the rift basins of Lake Baikal from multichannel seismic data

Recent multichannel seismic reflection data from Lake Baikal, located in a large, active, continental rift in central Asia, image three major stratigraphic units totalling 3.5 to 7.5 km thick in four subbasins. A major change in rift deposition and faulting between the oldest and middle-rift units probably corresponds to the change from slow to fast rifting. A brief comparison of the...

Retention of visible implant tags in lake trout and Atlantic salmon Retention of visible implant tags in lake trout and Atlantic salmon

Retention and readability of visible implant (VI) tags were evaluated in adult (2‐yearold) Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), adult (4‐year‐old) lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), and yearling (10‐month‐old) fish of both species. Tags were implanted in adipose eyelid tissue posterior to the eye. After 10 months, retention in yearlings was 49% by Atlantic salmon and 41% by lake trout. In...

Stimulation of coho salmon growth by insulin-like growth factor I Stimulation of coho salmon growth by insulin-like growth factor I

The effect of insulin-like growth factor I on growth rate of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) was examined. Juvenile coho salmon received implants of osmotic minipumps containing recombinant bovine insulin-like growth factor I (rbIGF-I) or saline for a period of 3 to 4 weeks. High doses of rbIGF-I (>0.13 μg · g−1 · d−1) resulted in hypoglycemia and death. In 2-year-old coho salmon, 0...

Effects of aerial applications of esfenvalerate on small mammals and birds in Douglas-fir seed orchards Effects of aerial applications of esfenvalerate on small mammals and birds in Douglas-fir seed orchards

Although no adverse effects were documented, this study did not provide data sufficient to adequately test for effects of aerial spraying of esfenvalerate on small mammal populations or nesting of birds in Douglas-fir seed orchards. Small mammal trapping data were too sparse to provide statistical testing with reasonable power. Residues of the R and S forms of fenvalerate were low with...

Status and Assessment of Chesapeake Bay Wildlife Contamination Status and Assessment of Chesapeake Bay Wildlife Contamination

As an integral component of its priority setting process, the Chesapeake Bay Program`s Toxics Subcommittee has sought the expertise of Chesapeake Bay researchers and managers in developing a series of Chesapeake Bay toxics status and assessment papers. In the report, evidence for historical and current contaminant effects on key bird species, mammals, reptiles and amphibians which...

Modeling metapopulation dynamics for single species of seabirds Modeling metapopulation dynamics for single species of seabirds

Seabirds share many characteristics setting them apart from other birds. Importantly, they breed more or less obligatorily in local clusters of colonies that can move regularly from site to site, and they routinely exchange breeders. The properties of such metapopulations have only recently begun to be examined, often with models that are occupancy-based (using only colony presence or...

Metabolic products as biomarkers Metabolic products as biomarkers

Ideally, endogenous biomarkers would indicate both exposure and environmental effects of toxic chemicals; however, such comprehensive biochemical and physiological indices are currently being developed and, at the present time, are unavailable for use in environmental monitoring programs. Continued work is required to validate the use of biochemical and physiological stress indices as...
