Parasite burdens in experimental families of coho salmon. Parasite burdens in experimental families of coho salmon.
We examined the possibility that parasites affect survival rates of anadromous hatchery coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch during their period in the wild. Survival was estimated from the rates at which adults returned to the hatchery. The frequency of infection of heart tissue by metacercariae of Nanophyetus sp. was higher in individuals from families with relatively high survival...

A natural epizootic of infectious haematopoietic necrosis in imported Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., reared in the enzootic region A natural epizootic of infectious haematopoietic necrosis in imported Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., reared in the enzootic region
In June 1984, fry of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., (0-3 g mean weight), being reared in a hatehery operated by the University of Washington, began to die and infectious haematopoietic necrosis (IHN) was diagnosed. A total of 40 000 fry were being held in 11 tanks. Mortality due to IHN was noticeable in three tanks, losses being heavy in one and moderate in two. Gross examination of...

Comparison of species composition and richness of fish assemblages in altered and unaltered littoral habitats Comparison of species composition and richness of fish assemblages in altered and unaltered littoral habitats
Species composition and richness of fish assemblages in altered and unaltered littoral habitats in Lake St. Clair, Michigan, differed between areas. A percid-cyprinid-cyprinodontid assemblage dominated in the unaltered area, Muscamoot Bay, which has a natural shoreline (with almost no alteration due to dredging or bulkheading), high water quality, and high species richness of aquatic...

Comparisons of spawning areas and times for two runs of chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the Kenai River, Alaska Comparisons of spawning areas and times for two runs of chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the Kenai River, Alaska
From 1979 to 1982,188 chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) were tagged with radio transmitters to locate spawning areas in the glacial Kenai River, southcentral Alaska. Results confirmed that an early run entered the river in May and June and spawned in tributaries, and a late run entered the river from late June through August and spawned in the main stem. Spawning peaked during...

Effects of a Kentucky flood-control reservoir on macroinvertebrates in the tailwater Effects of a Kentucky flood-control reservoir on macroinvertebrates in the tailwater
The effects of a flood-control reservoir on downstream macroinvertebrates were assessed by comparing the tailwater community with that of a natural stream. Samples were collected 1.6 and 21.1 km below Barren River Lake dam in 1979, 1980, and 1981 and in a reservoir tributary in 1980 and 1981. An indication of environmental stress in the macroinvertebrate community was observed at both...

Invertebrate colonization rates in the tailwater of a Kentucky flood-control reservoir Invertebrate colonization rates in the tailwater of a Kentucky flood-control reservoir
Invertebrate colonization on newly introduced rock substrates was examined from July through October 1982 in the tailwater of Barren River Lake, Kentucky. Chironomidae, the dominant taxon of benthic insects, reached full colonization by day 14. Colonization by Oligochaeta, the other major invertebrate taxon, was not completed by the end of the 95-day period of observation. It may have...
