Restricted Areas

Restricted Areas refer to federal public lands on which TNMCorps volunteers are not permitted to edit the recreation structures: campgrounds, trailheads, and visitor centers. The recreation data that exists within the restricted areas boundaries falls under the purview of the listed agencies and is not the USGS’s responsibility to maintain.

Where are they?

Restricted areas currently existing in the TNMCorps editor include lands managed by the:

Restricted Areas left sidebar menu and window results
To access the list of current restricted areas in which specific structures cannot be edited via the TNMCorps editor, click on the Restricted Areas tab in the left-hand menu.

If you attempt to edit and save a structure point located within a restricted area, you’ll be shown a warning message informing you that you are not authorized to edit within the specified restricted area:

This is the pop-up warning message you’ll receive if you attempt to edit and save a structure located within a restricted area.

How do I know if a point is in a restricted area?

The best way to know if a point is in a restricted area (other than attempting to edit it and getting the warning message) is to turn on the USA Federal Lands layer:

Drop down menu of the Map Layers list with a yellow box around the USA Federal Lands layer selection
Turn on the USA Federal Lands layer to see if a recreation point falls within a restricted area. Turn on the Legend to determine which federal lands are displayed over the area of interest. In this image, the USA Federal Lands layer is displaying US Forest Service lands.
