About Us

The USGS Staff provides and enables science focused on the natural hazards that threaten lives and livelihoods, the water, energy, minerals, and other natural resources we rely on, the health of our ecosystems and environment, and the impacts of climate and land-use change. Our scientists develop new methods and tools to enable timely, relevant, and useful information about the Earth and its processes.

    • Mission Areas

Changes to the natural world combined with growing human demands put our health and safety, national security, and economy at risk. We are focused on some of the most significant issues society faces, and our science is making a substantial contribution to the well-being of the Nation and the world. Learn more about the major topics our research covers and the programs focused on those topics.

Explore our Earth-and biological science programs and learn about our people, partners, and products.

    • Regions

The USGS researches, monitors, models and forecasts the effects of such change on the Nation's resources. The resulting information and products help policymakers, natural resource managers, and the public make informed decisions about the management of resources on which they depend.

    • Science Centers

Explore USGS Science Centers and their Center Directors, Region, State and/or Territory.

    • Observatories

USGS monitors volcano activity, assess their hazards, issues warnings, and advances scientific understanding to reduce impacts of volcano eruptions.

    • Laboratories

The USGS has over 500 laboratories nationwide. Those with active sites are listed here, with many more coming online over the coming year.

    • Science Support Offices

The scientific excellence at the USGS is due to more than excellent scientists. Behind the field research and mapmaking is the Science Support team. The Science Support team aids USGS science by budgeting necessary funds for research, communicating the actions of our scientists to the public, verifying the validity and quality of our science, and providing essential resources for
