Data Releases
The data collected and the techniques used by USGS scientists should conform to or reference national and international standards and protocols if they exist and when they are relevant and appropriate. For datasets of a given type, and if national or international metadata standards exist, the data are indexed with metadata that facilitates access and integration.

Satellite-derived shorelines for Romania Black Sea coast for the period 1984 - 2023 using Landsat Satellite-derived shorelines for Romania Black Sea coast for the period 1984 - 2023 using Landsat
This dataset contains shoreline positions derived from available Landsat satellite imagery (1984 to 2023) for the Romanian Black Sea coast. The shoreline positions were derived on transects 50 m apart using the open-source toolbox, CoastSat described in Vos and others, 2019a and 2019b. Landsat coastal imagery was classified, and shoreline positions were detected at the sub-pixel scale...
Nine-banded armadillo and coyote detection data and site-specific data from the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge during summer 2023 Nine-banded armadillo and coyote detection data and site-specific data from the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge during summer 2023
This dataset includes (i) camera-based detection data for nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) and coyotes (Canis latrans) and (ii) covariates characterizing the environmental conditions at each of 100 sites sampled in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge during summer 2023.
Novel Use of Antifungal Nail Lacquer to Treat Candida Bill Infections in Ducks Novel Use of Antifungal Nail Lacquer to Treat Candida Bill Infections in Ducks
Captive wild ducks in the research colony at the USGS Eastern Ecological Science Center, Laurel, Maryland USA frequently contract Candida infections on the upper and lower bills. Various standard treatments were attempted with mixed success. Several of the Surf Scoters, especially, suffered extreme erosions of the bill leading to euthanasia prior to using this new treatment. For the past...
Urban sediment and fallout radionuclide input characteristics of the Hickey Run watershed in Washington, D.C., USA for 2020-2022 Urban sediment and fallout radionuclide input characteristics of the Hickey Run watershed in Washington, D.C., USA for 2020-2022
This metadata record documents one comma delimited table that contains information on the grain size distribution, fallout radionuclide activity, and geochemical characteristics of urban sediments within the Hickey Run watershed in Washington, D.C. Measurements include radiological activity, sediment particle size information, and elemental composition of source and target sediments.
Greater Everglades Burmese Python Stable Isotope Data and Standard Ellipse Area Literature Review Greater Everglades Burmese Python Stable Isotope Data and Standard Ellipse Area Literature Review
Burmese pythons are an invasive species in the Greater Everglades Ecosystem. Burmese pythons captured in the ecosystem are euthanized, and in an effort to learn about this invasive species, all euthanized pythons are necropsied, during which time samples are collected. We analyzed the stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen in muscle samples from 423 Burmese pythons euthanized and...
Peat Thickness Measurements from Grand Bay, Mississippi and Alabama Peat Thickness Measurements from Grand Bay, Mississippi and Alabama
Location and elevation data were collected along with peat auger cores during six U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) field activities from 2013-2018 in and around Grand Bay, Mississippi (MS) and Alabama (AL) and used by Smith and others (2024). Peat auger cores were described, photographed, and the thickness of the peat unit was measured with a measuring tape. Following collection, the...
In situ geochemical data for clinopyroxene in igneous rocks of the Bear Lodge and Mineral Hill alkaline complexes, Wyoming In situ geochemical data for clinopyroxene in igneous rocks of the Bear Lodge and Mineral Hill alkaline complexes, Wyoming
Major, minor, and trace element data, as well as backscattered electron images, were collected for clinopyroxene crystals in alkaline silicate rocks (phonolite, tephriphonolite, latite, phonotephrite, and pyroxenite) of the Bear Lodge and Mineral Hill alkaline complexes, Wyoming. Samples of alkaline rocks thought to represent early and later stages of magmatism, based on observed...
Major, minor, and trace element composition of black shales of the Virginia Formation, Minnesota Major, minor, and trace element composition of black shales of the Virginia Formation, Minnesota
Sixty samples of Paleoproterozoic Virginia Formation of the Animikie Group black shales were collected from two public drill cores (VHD-00-1; LWD-99-2) housed at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Drill Core Library in Hibbing, MN. The black shale samples were ground to a powder and subjected to several analyses. Trace elements were determined using multi-acid digestion and...
Short-Lived Radium-Isotope (Radium-223 and -224) Specific Activity for Samples Collected Between November 2022 and March 2024 Along the West Florida Shelf (Indian Rocks Beach, Nature Coast, and Venice Headland) Short-Lived Radium-Isotope (Radium-223 and -224) Specific Activity for Samples Collected Between November 2022 and March 2024 Along the West Florida Shelf (Indian Rocks Beach, Nature Coast, and Venice Headland)
In 2021, a collaborative scientific investigation (National Science Foundation Grant Award OCE-2148989, Project 880516) was started for the purpose of quantifying shelf inventories and boundary fluxes of dissolved organic nitrogen and dissolved iron to the West Florida Shelf (WFS) to assess their role in supporting the oligotrophic WFS ecosystem. To assess the spatial and temporal...
Sea Otter Counts Near Subtidal Monitoring Sites Around San Nicolas Island, California 1980-2017 Sea Otter Counts Near Subtidal Monitoring Sites Around San Nicolas Island, California 1980-2017
The data consist of counts of sea otters in each year from 1980 to 2017 that are within 2 kilometers of the location of the 6 original subtidal ecosystem monitoring sites around San Nicolas Island, California. Beginning with the reintroduction of sea otter to the waters of San Nicolas Island in 1987, three to four surveys have been conducted at the island each year. Shore-based observers...
Thematic response frequency of user feedback on coastal science products Thematic response frequency of user feedback on coastal science products
Decision support tools play a critical role in assisting coastal decision-makers in managing coastal systems; yet there are challenges to developing tools that align with the functional needs of end-users. By combining usability testing and contextual inquiry methods, we put forth a hybrid approach for collecting user feedback within the context of federal government research. This...
Major and trace element geochemical data for the Petersburg Granite (sensu stricto), Pocoshock Creek Gneiss, and related Appalachian igneous rocks Major and trace element geochemical data for the Petersburg Granite (sensu stricto), Pocoshock Creek Gneiss, and related Appalachian igneous rocks
The Dinwiddie terrane, formerly the Petersburg Granite (sensu lato), was originally interpreted as a Pennsylvanian - Permian igneous complex located in the eastern Piedmont of Virginia and considered to be a single batholith that comprises different textural varieties, likely assumed to have been emplaced from a single source during Alleghanian metamorphism (Bloomer 1939; Bobyarchick...
