Concepts are included from the life sciences; environmental sciences; aquatic sciences and fisheries; ecotourism, fire ecology and management; and sociology.

During the recent droughts of 2007-2010 and 2012-2017, groundwater pumping has increased from the combined effects of the drought and land-use changes, re-initiating land subsidence. In order to document historical subsidence and monitor continued changes, the USGS has gathered and interpreted data from a variety of sources.

We conduct post-fire debris-flow hazard assessments for select fires in the Western U.S. We use geospatial data related to basin morphometry, burn severity, soil properties, and rainfall characteristics to estimate the probability and volume of debris flows that may occur in response to a design storm.
