Developing tools to image the Earth in 3D using gravity and magnetic fields - Anjana Shah
Develop cutting-edge computational tools that provide 3D views of Earth’s crust using gravity and magnetic fields. Results of these efforts will have a wide range of applications from mapping natural resources to evaluating natural hazards. These tools will be applied to airborne geophysical data, especially those collected for the USGS Earth MRI effort.
Hydrothermal alteration at Yellowstone - linking geophysical models to alteration mineralogy- Paul Bedrosian
This opportunity focuses on integration of geophysical modeling with constraints on alteration mineralogy from spectral measurements on drill core and hyperspectral remote sensing data.
Water Withdrawal Footprint Visualizations- Daniel Goode
Decision makers, water use stakeholders, and the public at large need intuitive visualizations of the status and trends in water use in order to make wise management decisions. How can we best turn newly available details on water use in the US into geospatial information that can be easily understood, without biasing that information. Help us create maps that make our water use data come alive.
Strategic Communications for Land Remote Sensing- Timothy Stryker
Are you interested in communicating the value of science and technology? Are you excited about the use of Earth observations to help solve society's most pressing problems? If so, then come work with the USGS to advance the use of land imaging satellite observations with key stakeholders!
Operational remote sensing on the verge of changing water resources management- Kyle Blasch
Have you ever thought that our nation’s satellites could be put to better use than watching you drink your fifth cup of coffee as you prepare for final exams? If so, then this is a project that you would enjoy. The hydrologic community is at a pivotal moment in the application of remote sensing into everyday decision making and we need you.
Hazard and losses from earthquake-triggered landslides and liquefaction- Kate Allstadt
Augment existing near real-time earthquake-triggered landslide and liquefaction hazard models with products such as landslide dam likelihood, road network disturbances, and disruption to ports. Investigate methods for improving and/or rapidly updating models such as remote sensing data, historical fill maps, and social media and news reports.
Yellowstone National Park Integrated Studies- JoAnn Holloway
The goal of the project supported by the internship is to evaluate mineral assemblages in drill hole core collected from Yellowstone National Park using spectral methods, determine subsurface structures using electromagnetic methods, and to evaluate the distribution of rare earth elements and other trace metals associated with minerals using scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe.
Geophysical studies into the architecture of large igneous systems hosting magmatic ore deposits- Carol Finn
Exploring for the critical platinum-group elements (PGEs) relies upon understanding the geophysical signature of the entire magmatic system in which they form, from bottom to top. The USGS is applying a range of geophysical techniques to investigate the internal architecture of layered mafic intrusions.
Climate-Landscape Response (CLaRe) Metrics: Applications for managers- Cynthia Wallace
Never has a tool been able to map the location and phenological status of buffelgrass, including nascent populations, on a regional scale. Developed for a specific management issue, CLaRe metrics hold promise for many natural resource applications. You will demonstrate these metrics in the context of an important management issue of your choice developed with the principal investigator.
