Christopher Duross

Biography

As a paleoseismologist, I investigate evidence of prehistoric surface-faulting earthquakes using subsurface fault-trench investigations and geomorphic and geologic mapping. This work is mostly focused in the Basin and Range Province (Great Basin) on long, segmented faults such as the Wasatch and Lost River fault zones. Ultimately, the goal of this research is to help reduce earthquake risk by improving seismic-source models used in earthquake probability and hazard modeling.

 

Primary research interests:

  • Development of earthquake timing and displacement data for active/hazardous faults 
  • Integration of paleoseismic data from multiple trench sites
  • Controls on fault segmentation and earthquake rupture length
  • Relations among fault rupture length, displacement, and seismic moment
  • Digital terrain models derived from low-altitude aerial photography (structure from motion)

Active research projects:

  • Wasatch fault zone (Utah): Constructing objective fault rupture models for the Wasatch fault zone using the Stringing Pearls method 
  • Lost River fault zone (Idaho): Investigating on- and off-fault patterns of displacement along the 1983 M 7.3 Borah Peak earthquake rupture
  • Wasatch Front (Utah): Forecasting a large-magnitude earthquake in the Wasatch Front region, as part of the Working Group on Utah Earthquake Probabilities
  • Wasatch fault zone (Utah): Paleoseismic investigation of the Salt Lake City segment at the Corner Canyon trench site
  • West Valley fault zone (Utah): Paleoseismic investigation of the Taylorsville fault, in collaboration with the Utah Geological Survey
  • Wasatch fault zone (Utah): Paleoseismic investigation of the Nephi segment at the Spring Lake and North Creek trench sites
