The alluvial aquifer at Louisville, Kentucky, lies in a valley eroded by glacial melt-water that was later partly filled with outwash sand and gravel deposits. To monitor the groundwater levels, twenty-eight existing wells were incorporated into an observation well network, which is measured quarterly. The Hydrologic Monitoring Program’s Connecticut Networks Section responded to recent high flow events to verify stage-discharge relationships and has been hard at work this summer installing new gages and performing maintenance on the Connecticut gage network.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) and New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC), implemented a summer dissolved oxygen (DO) monitoring program from 2015 to 2018 to examine the effects of phosphorus loading in streams.

Hurricane Sandy, one of the most destructive hurricanes in U.S. history, significantly affected the mid Atlantic coast in 2012. In New Jersey, where Sandy made landfall, much of the coast consists of barrier islands - narrow stretches of sand deposited parallel to the mainland coast – that were deeply eroded, overwashed and in places breached by the storm.
