Industrial water use for 2020 by county, HUC12, month, and year for the conterminous United States
The U.S. Geological Survey is developing national water-use models to support water resources management in the United States. Model benefits include a nationally consistent estimation approach, greater temporal and spatial resolution of estimates, efficient and automated updates of results, and capabilities to forecast water use into the future and assess model uncertainty. In this data release, water use refers to water that is withdrawn by industrial facilities categorized by 2-digit North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) codes 31-33. Industrial withdrawals provide water for such purposes as fabricating, processing, washing, diluting, cooling, or transporting a product; incorporating water into a product; or sanitation needs within the manufacturing facility. Water for industrial use may be delivered from a public supplier or be self-supplied. In this data release, industrial water use refers to self-supplied industrial withdrawals only. This data release contains self-supplied industrial water-use estimates for 2020 by county and by 12-digit hydrologic unit code (HUC12).
Two versions of the HUC12 polygon feature classes were used to facilitate ease of use for various researchers. The first one is the National watershed boundary (HUC12) dataset for the conterminous United States that was retrieved on 10/26/2020 and is referred to as HUC12a. This HUC12 feature class was used by researchers who completed estimates of water use for the categories of irrigation, public-supply, and thermoelectric. This feature class is located here, https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/66bb9d02d34e033882815353. The second version of the watershed boundary HUC12 dataset is a modified version of the National Hydrography Dataset Plus version 2 that includes additional attributes and is referred to as HUC12b. This HUC12 feature class was used by researchers working on the integrated water availability assessments.
