How do Landsat Collection 2 Level-2 products compare with products from Collection 1?
Landsat Collection 2 Level-2 Surface Reflectance and Surface Temperature products are scene-based, are produced within the standard processing system, and are made available to download directly from EarthExplorer. In comparison, Landsat Collection 1 Level-2 products are only available via on-demand processing (Surface Reflectance, scene-based), or within Landsat Collection 1 U.S. Analysis Ready Data (ARD) (Surface Temperature, tile-based). The table below provides a brief overview of the differences between Collection 1 and Collection 2 Level-2 products.
NOTE: Landsat Collection 2 Level-2 products can only be produced for Landsat 4-5 TM, Landsat 7 ETM+, and Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS scenes. Landsat MSS 1-5 data cannot be processed into Level-2 products at this time.

Landsat Collection 2 Level-2 products require Landsat Collection 2 Level-1 scenes that have been processed to Tier 1 or Tier 2, as well as additional auxiliary data. For Landsat 7, the timeframe from acquisition (Real-Time -RT) to Tier 1 or Tier 2 takes approximately 25-27 days. For Landsat 8 scenes, the timeframe from acquisition (RT) to Tier 1 or Tier 2 takes approximately 15-17 days.

New “Landsat Collections” Help Facilitate Land Change Science
Access to consistent high-quality images to study changes on Earth’s surface is getting easier. The USGS Landsat standard (Level-1) product inventory is now structured by data quality and offers improved calibration. Data designated as Tier 1 provide the highest accuracy and can be reliably used to analyze changes to Earth’s surface over time.
