Precursory spattering began at 3:55 AM followed by lava overflowing the vent at 4:11 AM. Vigorous low fountains and lava flows continue at this time. TEpisode 29 high fountains are expected today, likely within a few hours or less.

Moderate glow has returned to the north vent tonight suggesting the plug may be breaking down. The cracks in the cone just above the vent also continue to glow. Tremor levels remain low but elevated and slow inflation continues.
Kilauea Message 2025-07-09 06:07:31 HST
Fountains from the north vent are now approximately 1000 feet (305 meters) high. Volcanic ash, pumice, and Peleʻs hair are being blown to the south-southwest of the vent.

High fountaining began at 5:15 AM with lava fountains from the north vent growing rapidly from 100 feet (30 meters) to 600-700 feet (200 meters) by 5:30 AM. Based on previous eruptions, lava fountains may exceed 1000 feet during episode 28.

Sustained lava fountains from the north vent are now up to 150 feet (50 meters) high and feed a vigorous flow on the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu, High fountains are expected to begin soon as degassed magma is cleared from the vent.

Episode 28 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began with low fountains and lava flows from the north vent at 4:10 AM on July 9th. Fountains are currently about 100 feet (30 meters) high but are expected to grow quickly.

At 6:15 p.m. HST on July 7, brief and minor overflows began from the north vent in association with gas piston cycles. These cycles are a common occurrence as summit inflation pushes lava closer to the surface within the vent conduit.
Kilauea Message 2025-07-05 20:03:07 HST
Spatter can occasionally be seen from the north vent after dark. Spattering is related to rhythmic gas piston cycles that are occurring every 5-10 minutes. Most spattering is occurring deeper in the vent and is not visible on the cameras.

The ongoing Halema'uma'u eruption is paused. Summit inflation resumed after episode 27 ended. Persistent low-level seismic tremor continues. More time and data are needed before a forecast window can be made for episode 28.

Episode 27 ended abruptly at 7:54 P.M. HST on June 29th. Flames were visible at the south vent for a few minutes afterwards. High fountains lasted 10.9 hours and produced 6.2 million cubic meters of lava covering 80% of the crater floor.

Current lava fountain hazards include windblown volcanic gas emissions, volcanic glass (Pele’s hair) and other tephra (ejected volcanic rock fragements) that may impact the Kīlauea summit region of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
Kilauea Message 2025-06-29 14:55:30 HST
Tephra is falling near V3 cam. Lava fountains continue to reach heights over 1,000 ft (305 m). Light and variable winds combined with fountain thermal effects are causing the plume to move around within the crater and south/southeast rim.
