Kilauea Message Tue, 22 Dec 2020 11:22:41 HST
The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory will be posting short status check messages to provide a quick synopsis of eruptive events at Kīlauea Volcano. This is an initial test message.
Kilauea Message Sun, 12 Aug 2018 15:43:53 HST
Pause in eruptive activity at the Lower East Rift Zone and summit continues. However, active lava within crusted lava pond in fissure 8 cone and at several ocean entry points observed yesterday. Hazardous conditions remain.
Kilauea Message Thu, 09 Aug 2018 12:07:03 HST
A crusted lava pond was observed deep within the fissure 8 cone this morning. It may be at a depth near the pre-eruption ground surface.
Kilauea Message Tue, 07 Aug 2018 16:23:31 HST
Rates of summit seismicity and deformation remain very low. Fissure 8 hosts a small lava pond. It remains too early to tell whether this is just a pause in activity. Hazardous conditions remain.
Kilauea Message Sun, 05 Aug 2018 14:39:30 HST
Rates of seismicity and deformation at summit and lava output from fissure 8 continue to be low. Too soon to tell if the decreased activity will persist. Hazardous conditions remain.
Kilauea Message Sat, 04 Aug 2018 21:25:34 HST
Rates of seismicity and deformation at summit and lava output from fissure 8 have decreased since most recent collapse event at 11:55 am HST August 2. Too soon to tell if the decrease will persist. Hazardous conditions remain.
Kilauea Message Thu, 02 Aug 2018 12:05:38 HST
A collapse event occurred at 11:55 a.m. HST on August 2, with the equivalent energy release of a magnitude 5.4 earthquake according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).
Kilauea Message Tue, 31 Jul 2018 08:28:58 HST
The summit caldera of Kīlauea underwent a collapse event at 7:59 AM July 31 HST with a equivalent energy of a magnitude 5.3 earthquake.
Kilauea Message Tue, 31 Jul 2018 01:21:17 HST
A magnitude 4.5 earthquake occurred at the summit at 12:30 AM HST on 7/31. This was not a collapse event. But summit seismicity is high and a collapse event is likely to occur later today.
Kilauea Message Sun, 29 Jul 2018 12:25:14 HST
A collapse event occurred this afternoon at 12:10 PM HST. Magnitude was 5.4 according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).
