This page displays the latest volcano observatory short messages issued by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. These short messages are quick status updates published on our website, social media, RSS and JSON. They supplement more detailed official products published in the Volcano Notification Service.

South fountains have dropped from 600 feet (180 meters) at 8:00 pm HST March 4 to 250-300 feet (80-90 meters) by 9:00 pm HST. South vent is still feeding a very active flow.

Fountains from the north vent began dropping between 8:20 and 8:26 pm HST on March 4. Sporadic spattering continued for another 15 minutes. By 8:50 pm south fountains dropped by about half.

Fountains from the north vent are reaching heights of around 100 feet (30 meters) and are increasing as episode 12 continues at 2:17 pm HST on March 4. Small overflows are also continuing from the south vent with very little fountaining.

Lava began erupting from the north vent at 1:46 pm HST March 4 together with the continuing flows from the south vent. These are slow moving degassed lava that is being expelled from the vents prior to the onset of fountains.

Overflows from the south vent began again just prior to 12:45 pm HST on March 4 continuing the intermittent start of episode 12. Fountains remain very low and within the south cone.

Lava began erupting from the north vent at 9:33 am HST on March 4. Sluggish overflows continued until 9:45 am HST. Earlier flows from the south vent stopped at 7:50 am HST.

Small lava flows from the south vent ended by 8:00 am HST March 4. At 8:04 am HST, USGS scientists saw spattering within the north vent, but nothing in the south vent. Lava is not currently erupting onto the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu crater.

Episode 12 continues to erupt from only the south vent at 7:50 a.m. HST March 4. Lava is highly degassed and is overflowing the vent with very little fountaining. High fountains should begin after degassed lava is pushed from the vent.

Lava began erupting from the south vent in Halema'uma'u at approximately 7:30 am HST this morning March 4. This is episode 12 of the Kīlauea eruption that began on December 23. No lava is visible within the north vent at this time

Episode 11 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park paused at 7:06 a.m. HST February 26 when the south vent stopped. The north vent stopped erupting at 6:35 am.
