Currently, moderate glow is observed from both the north vent and the collapse above the south vent (formerly called the crack). The south vent is dark. The new collapse began glowing around 8:45 pm and increased just before 10 pm HST. View All Messages.

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake occurred beneath Kamaʻehuakanaloa volcano (formerly Lōʻihi) at 5:48 pm HST. This earthquake was felt widely along the southern and eastern sides of the Island of Hawaiʻi. No damage expected. View All Messages.

Tephra is material erupted from a volcano that travels through the air. Volcanic ash, Pele's hair, and other tephra have fallen on communities downwind during lava fountaining episodes at the summit of Kīlauea.
