Data Releases

The data collected and the techniques used by USGS scientists should conform to or reference national and international standards and protocols if they exist and when they are relevant and appropriate. For datasets of a given type, and if national or international metadata standards exist, the data are indexed with metadata that facilitates access and integration.

Egg Membrane Thickness in 13 Waterbird Species

Eggshells of 13 waterbird species were divided in half longitudinally and the outer eggshell membrane was removed from one of the halves. Eggshell thickness was measured for both eggshell halves, both with and without the outer eggshell membrane. The eggshell membrane thickness was calculated by taking the difference between the two thickness measurements.

Tracking Data for Long-billed Curlews (Numenius americanus)

This metadata document describes the data contained in the "processedData" folder of this data package. This data package contains all data collected by the Argos System from 28 satellite transmitters attached to Long-billed Curlews at breeding sites in Oregon, Nevada, and Montana. The raw data were processed to accomplish two goals: flag implausible location estimates and decode raw sensor data.

Hydrochemistry and Age Date Tracers from Springs, Streams, and Rivers in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, 2019-2022

These data include water chemistry from springs, streams, rivers, and shallow groundwater collected in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in northern Alaska. Chemical analyses were performed for hydrochemical parameters including field parameters, major ions, nutrients, metals, stable isotopes of water, and tritium, as well as for dissolved gases useful for determining the timescale over which th

Paleomagnetic inclination data collected from Coreholes EREF-GW-1, STF-PIE-AQ-02, TAN 2336, USGS 138, USGS 139, USGS 142, USGS 143, USGS 144, USGS 145, USGS 147, and USGS 148A, located at and near the Idaho National Laboratory, Idaho

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, conducted a study on the magnetic record contained in subsurface basalts within coreholes at the Idaho National Laboratory. Standard 1 inch paleomagnetism core samples were collected from 11 coreholes. The samples were characterized for polarity and average paleomagnetic inclinations over the entire length of the drill

MODFLOW 6 Model Scenario used to Simulate Transient Stresses, Heads, and Flows in the Regional Aquifer System of Long Island, New York, 2005-2019

This data release contains the input, output, and model code used to run a transient simulation of a previously published (Walter and others, 2020) steady-state regional model of Long Island, N.Y. The original model code was updated to MODFLOW 6 (version 6.3.0) and incorporates monthly transient stress periods to simulate conditions from 2005-2019 following methods described in Walter and others (

Airborne magnetic and radiometric survey, South Pass-Granite Mountains region, Wyoming, 2023

This data release provides digital flight line data for a high-resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric survey over the South Pass-Granite Mountains region in central Wyoming. The airborne survey was funded by the state of Wyoming, designed by the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS), and contracted by the USGS. The survey is aligned with the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative and was design

Field Site Locations from Phragmites Bioherbicide 2023 Field Experiment in Southeast Michigan

This dataset represents the locations of experimental plots that were used during the Phragmites Bioherbicide 2023 field experiment. To meet the criteria for selection, a site must have relatively dry soil with no standing water, have two or more large monotypic stands of Phragmites australis, and be easily accessible by vehicle. Experimental plots were created at these sites and one of four treat

Twelve-digit hydrologic unit soil moisture, recharge, actual evapotranspiration, and snowpack water equivalent storage from the National Hydrologic Model Infrastructure with the Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System 1980-2016

This dataset is part of the National Water Census Water Budget Estimation and Evaluation Project's ongoing development of best estimates of daily historical water budgets for over 100,000 hydrologic units across the United States. In this release, estimates of actual evapotranspiration and snowpack water equivalent storage are added to the already released estimates of soil moisture, recharge, str

Data release for an experimental translocation of invasive bigheaded carps and upstream passage success at a navigation lock

This dataset accompanies the article 'Upstream experience and experimental translocation of invasive bigheaded carps results in increased upstream passage success at a navigation lock in a large river'. The data come from the experimental capture and tagging of invasive bigheaded carp with acoustic transmitters and physically moving some groups farther downstream. These transmitters emit signals t

Captures and Trapping Effort for Deer Mice (Peromyscus sonoriensis) at Point Reyes National Seashore, California, USA from 2021 to 2022

These data represent trapping effort and captures of deer mice at Point Reyes National Seashore, Marin County, California. Deer mice were captured and marked with ear tags to allow identification of individuals. The location of captures can be used in a spatially explicit capture recapture model to estimate density of mice and how mouse density varies by site and habitat type.

Maternal Transfer of Mercury to Northern Elephant Seal Pups

We used free-ranging northern elephant seals as a model species to investigate maternal transfer of mercury (Hg) to pups in relation to maternal traits, including maternal blood mercury concentrations, and to quantify the links between pup lanugo mercury concentrations and maternal mesopelagic foraging behavior during gestation. We satellite tracked known-age adult females at sea during their seve

Isle Royale National Park Vegetation Change Analysis 1996 to 2017

Vegetation change is an important issue facing managers at Isle Royale National Park (ISRO). These data were created using high-resolution imagery collected in the winter of 2017 which was compared to the vegetation map of the National Park published in 2000 (project imagery collected in 1994 and 1996). These data review where vegetation cover type, density, and pattern have changed since imagery
