Data Releases

The data collected and the techniques used by USGS scientists should conform to or reference national and international standards and protocols if they exist and when they are relevant and appropriate. For datasets of a given type, and if national or international metadata standards exist, the data are indexed with metadata that facilitates access and integration.

Telemetry data of a Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) positive for 2.3.4.4 Highly Pathogenic H5N1 Telemetry data of a Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) positive for 2.3.4.4 Highly Pathogenic H5N1

Wild lesser scaup from the Chesapeake Bay, captured and implanted with satellite transmitters for a separate ecology study, were opportunistically sampled for avian influenza. These data detail the virological sampling results, obtained post release, which include a single positive for clade 2.3.4.4 H5N1 virus of the A/goose/Guangdong/1/1996 (Gs/GD) H5N1 lineage of highly pathogenic IAV...

Wetland elevation and soil characteristics across Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge (2020-2021) Wetland elevation and soil characteristics across Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge (2020-2021)

The recent completion of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS) for New Orleans has effectively blocked surface water exchange between Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge (BSNWR) and the surrounding Lake(s) Pontchartrain and Borgne and the Gulf of Mexico to which it was once connected. Monitoring changes in hydrology, water...

POPMAPS: An R package to estimate ancestry probability surfaces POPMAPS: An R package to estimate ancestry probability surfaces

This software code was developed to estimate the probability that individuals found at a geographic location will belong to the same genetic cluster as individuals at the nearest empirical sampling location for which ancestry is known. POPMAPS includes 5 main functions to calculate and visualize these results (see Table 1 for functions and arguments). Population assignment coefficients...

Network Analysis of USGS Streamflow Gages Network Analysis of USGS Streamflow Gages

This data release has components of an analysis of the coverage, resolution, and representation of national public interests in streamflow information by the USGS streamflow gaging network that was active in water year 2020. The workflow for the analysis is implemented as scripts and functions in the statistical programming language R. The spatial framework for the analysis is based on...

USGS National and Global Oil and Gas Assessment Project - Western Australia Assessment Unit Boundaries and Assessment Input Forms USGS National and Global Oil and Gas Assessment Project - Western Australia Assessment Unit Boundaries and Assessment Input Forms

This data release contains the boundaries of conventional assessment units for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources in Perth Basin, NW Shelf, Browse Basin, and Bonaparte Gulf Basin Provinces of Western Australia. The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit...

USGS National and Global Oil and Gas Assessment Project-Greater Taranaki and East Coast Basins, New Zealand, Assessment Unit Boundaries and Assessment Input Forms USGS National and Global Oil and Gas Assessment Project-Greater Taranaki and East Coast Basins, New Zealand, Assessment Unit Boundaries and Assessment Input Forms

This data release contains the boundaries of conventional assessment units for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources in the Greater Taranaki and East Coast Basins, New Zealand. The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the...

Continuous Water Level, Salinity, and Temperature Data from Coastal Wetland Monitoring Wells, Cape Cod, Massachusetts (ver. 3.0, September 2025) Continuous Water Level, Salinity, and Temperature Data from Coastal Wetland Monitoring Wells, Cape Cod, Massachusetts (ver. 3.0, September 2025)

Environmental parameters affecting plant productivity and microbial respiration, such as water level, salinity, and groundwater temperature included in these datasets, are key components of wetland carbon cycling, carbon storage, and capacity to maintain elevation. Data were collected to (1) provide background data to evaluate potential differences in water level and carbon flux between...

Static chamber gas fluxes and carbon and nitrogen isotope content of age-dated sediment cores from a Phragmites wetland in Sage Lot Pond, Massachusetts, 2013-2015 Static chamber gas fluxes and carbon and nitrogen isotope content of age-dated sediment cores from a Phragmites wetland in Sage Lot Pond, Massachusetts, 2013-2015

Coastal wetlands are major global carbon sinks, however, they are heterogeneous and dynamic ecosystems. To characterize spatial and temporal variability in a New England salt marsh, static chamber measurements of greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes were compared among major plant-defined zones (high marsh dominated by Distichlis spicata and a zone of invasive Phragmites australis) during 2013...

Metal concentrations in seston and water in the Clark Fork River, MT Metal concentrations in seston and water in the Clark Fork River, MT

Legacy mine waste from the Clark Fork River in Western Montana has contributed 100 million tons of tailings into the watershed between 1880 and 1982 (E.D. Andrews, Longitudinal dispersion of metals in the Clark Fork River, Montana, Lewis Publishers, 1987). Tailings deposited along the floodplain, streambanks and river channel continue to contribute metal contaminated material into the...

Lifespan of marsh units in Assateague Island National Seashore and Chincoteague Bay, Maryland and Virginia Lifespan of marsh units in Assateague Island National Seashore and Chincoteague Bay, Maryland and Virginia

The sediment-based lifespan of salt marsh units in Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS) and Chincoteague Bay is shown for conceptual marsh units defined by Defne and Ganju (2018). The lifespan represents the timescale by which the current sediment mass within a marsh parcel can no longer compensate for sediment export and deficits induced by sea-level rise. The lifespan calculation...

Data related to great diversity of KSalpha genes from bat skin external microbiota, from Arizona and New Mexico, indicate novel PKSII biosynthetic gene clusters Data related to great diversity of KSalpha genes from bat skin external microbiota, from Arizona and New Mexico, indicate novel PKSII biosynthetic gene clusters

We documented the type two polyketide synthases(PKS II) gene diversity and novelty by sequencing KSalpha; genes known to synthesize bioactive small molecules. Sequences were derived from culturable bacteria isolated from bats in Arizona and New Mexico. We targeted the PKS II pathway which comprised a large proportion of the culture collection. Genomic analyses of a 16-member subset of...

Water and Bed Sediment Data Associated with the Occurrence and Distribution of Mercury in Streams and Reservoirs in the Triangle Area of North Carolina, July 2007 - June 2009 Water and Bed Sediment Data Associated with the Occurrence and Distribution of Mercury in Streams and Reservoirs in the Triangle Area of North Carolina, July 2007 - June 2009

As part of the Triangle Area Water Supply Monitoring Program, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a study to evaluate the occurrence and distribution of mercury in 14 streams and 15 reservoirs in the Triangle area of North Carolina. This Data Release contains the associated data described in the Scientific Investigations Report, "Occurrence and Distribution of Mercury in Streams and...
