Bathymetric change off the Washington-Oregon coast Bathymetric change off the Washington-Oregon coast
Historical hydrographic data from the Washington/Oregon shelf are compared for the first time to identify bathymetric change on a regional scale. Offshore data sets exist for four time periods: 1800s, pre-1950s, post-1950s, and 1990s. Data from only two time periods, 1868-87 and 1926-27, cover the entire offshore region between Tillamook Head, Oregon and Grays Harbor, Washington. A...

Evaluation of landslide hazards with ground-penetrating radar, Lake Michigan coast Evaluation of landslide hazards with ground-penetrating radar, Lake Michigan coast
Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and boreholes were used to investigate a landslide-prone bluff at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on the northeastern coast of Lake Michigan. Based on borehole observations, sediment underlying the area is homogeneous, consisting of well-sorted, medium to coarse sand. GPR penetrated up to 20 m deep in these sediments, revealing the late Quaternary...

Atlantic white cedar plantings in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, and the Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge, Mississippi Atlantic white cedar plantings in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, and the Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge, Mississippi
Populations of Atlantic white cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides (L.) B.S.P.) growing at the extreme western range of the species are in danger of being lost, and information on the ecology of these populations is limited. Seeds and seedlings ("wildlings") were collected near Vancleave, MS. The wildlings were transplanted to bay-head sites on Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge where canopy...

Diet of the double-crested cormorant in western Lake Erie Diet of the double-crested cormorant in western Lake Erie
Sport and commercial fishing interest groups are concerned about potential impacts double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) may have on fish species. Our objectives for this study were to determine the diet of the cormorant in western Lake Erie and the diet overlap and competition for resources with piscivorous fish, such as walleye (Stizostedion vitreum). The stomach contents...
